  • Base Salary (Level B) $122,830 to $145,858 p.a. + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

The Sydney Environment Institute is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Carbon Footprint Quantificationto join a new three-year interdisciplinary research project to reduce the Carbon Footprint of the healthcare system. The successful candidate should have knowledge and skills in methodologies for material flow analysis and hybridising physical, financial and economic data in the context of Carbon Footprinting techniques and will be working as part of a larger multidisciplinary team. The project is being undertaken in collaboration with the Integrated Sustainability Analysis team in the School of Physics and the Central Clinical School.

The project aims to:

  • measure the emissions produced by common medical activities and refine emission measurement methodologies for healthcare
  • identify the best methods and tools for communicating carbon costs to health consumers, clinicians and hospital/health service executives
  • explore the barriers and opportunities to influence environmental change within the healthcare system and, test pathways for policy development aimed at reducing healthcare related emissions at scale.
  • build partnerships with key stakeholders and policy makers, from health consumers through to federal health policy advisors to effect change
  • identify the pathways for translating this research into policy and practice at the local, state and federal levels.

Working as part of a larger team, the Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Carbon Footprint Quantification will play a key role developing appropriate methodologies to quantify the systemic Carbon Footprint of medical activity. They will be responsible for working with the Project Director to set the research agenda for their component of the overall project and ensuring their research program meets its set objectives. They will support the Chief Investigators, Academic Research Project Director and research professionals. The position will be accountable to an Associate Professor in the Integrated Sustainability Analysis team in the School of Physics.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • develop a peer reviewed methodology hybridising physical, financial and economic data for hospital related medical activity Carbon Footprinting
  • develop a peer reviewed methodology to integrate unit process data into hybrid methods for hospital activity Carbon Footprinting appropriate to different systems interventions
  • quantify and analyse identified medical activity footprints using physical and accounting data with worked examples
  • demonstrate research excellence by publishing original research in high-ranking journals, present research at academic seminars and at national and international conferences and collaborate with other researchers at a national and international level.
  • actively contribute to seeking and securing external funding.

About you

  • doctoral qualifications in a relevant field such as Industrial Ecology, or equivalent research experience
  • demonstrated extensive experience and knowledge in the field of emissions measurement through Environmentally Extended Input/output analysis, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with knowledge of their hybridisation in appropriate contexts
  • experience and knowledge of emissions measurement approaches and their application in complex settings such as healthcare, or comparable industry
  • demonstrated publication record in high-ranking journals
  • ability to undertake supervision at Masters or PhD level
  • ability to contribute cooperatively to the overall intellectual life of the Sydney Environment Institute, Integrated Sustainability Analysis team in the School of Physics, and the Central Clinical School
  • knowledge of the Higher Education Research Data Collection and ethics reporting requirements.

Desirable:

  • familiarity with the operation of the Australian healthcare system.
