About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join a national and internationally connected research program in quantitative genetics in horticultural crops. The position is funded through a collaboration with Washington State University on the USDA-SCRI project Enabling Genomics-Assisted Specialty Crop Breeding and Research through Advanced Database Resources.

The primary goal of this position is to drive the development of multi-environment genomic prediction models to connect historical data collected across a global space through collaboration with project crop scientists. The focus crops will be almond, apple, blueberry and strawberry. The position also offers the opportunity for you to assist with the development of new projects in this space and in other related areas. The role also offers opportunities for co-supervision of higher degree students, and contribution to service and engagement roles to support the university and the profession.

Key responsibilities will include:
Research

  • Collaborate with international partners to identify appropriate data for developing multi-environment models
  • Develop methods for imputation to unify genotypic data produced by different methods across genotyping platforms
  • Develop multi-environment prediction models using aggregated data
  • Communicate research outputs through publication in high quality journals, presenting at conferences, and engaging with colleagues and industry.
  • Develop a coherent research program and an emerging research profile.
  • Participate in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities.

Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).
  • Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.

Citizenship and Service

  • Demonstrate citizenship behaviours that align to the UQ values.
  • Contribute to internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.
  • Begin to develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.
  • Shows leadership of self through collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the unit

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 2 years, at Academic level A. The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $86,346.14 - $99,426.59, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to 101,024.98 - 116,329.11 annually.

About YouEssential

  • Completion or near completion of a PhD relevant to the research area.
  • An emerging profile of research in quantitative genetics, linear models, genomics, bioinfomatics.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake research independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to identify challenges and develop innovative solutions
  • Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.
  • Some experience in meaningful internal service roles and contributions towards external activities

Desirable

  • Demonstrated interest in obtaining external research funding.
