We have fantastic strategic partners, including the Perth Wildcats and Perth Lynx basketball teams, Athletics Australia and the Queensland Rugby Union. The foundation is set for a corporate communications professional to maximise the value of our partnerships and really bring the portfolio to life.
We’re looking for a Principal AdvisorStrategic Partnerships, based in the Perth office, to support Rio Tinto’s national partnerships program. You’ll work within the wider Australia Corporate Communications team, which was formed in 2023 to provide thoughtful, expert communications counsel that helps the business clearly articulate what we do and what we stand for.
Deep experience managing sport, community and commercial sponsorships and partnerships that contribute to the overarching corporate strategy is vital. Success in this role looks like someone who’s known as a great team player and an outstanding contributor to a truly integrated partnership program that elevates Rio Tinto’s reputation in Australia – in other words, someone who’s brilliant to work with and gets things done.

  • Manage key relationships in Western Australia: You’ll work with internal stakeholders (including colleagues across Australia in human resources, communications, media relations, external affairs, social investment and indigenous affairs) to identify and develop opportunities to promote and maximise the value of our partnerships, including through direct-event attendance, volunteering and harnessing social and mainstream media in creative ways.
  • Share knowledge: As our expert on the ground in Perth, you’ll share your deep understanding of partnerships best-practice with relevant Rio Tinto Product Groups and functional teams in Western Australia.
  • Engage with our agencies: You’ll work productively and well with Rio Tinto’s appointed partnership management agency, so we get things done.
  • Provide portfolio support: You’ll activate and leverage additional contractual rights from other partnerships within the broader national portfolio.
  • Exercise reputation awareness: You’ll anticipate, prepare and help manage reputation related to the company’s partnerships.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the positive role partnerships play driving reputation in large companies, agencies, or government departments.
  • The capacity to think a little differently by seeking out and applying new approaches to partnerships, including effective ways to measure performance and reach strategically important audiences.
  • Proven capability to contribute to high performing teams (sense of humour highly regarded).
  • Proven ability to deliver results in a complex, often uncertain environment, while remaining calm, diplomatic and considered under pressure.
  • Top notch written and verbal communication skills.
