Job description

Do you have a strong commitment to fostering partnerships with Traditional Owners and First Peoples' communities in Victoria? If so, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional to join our team as the Principal Policy Officer, First Peoples' Energy.
Position overview:
The Principal Policy Officer will lead a work program comprising project delivery, policy development, and senior stakeholder engagement in the First Peoples' Energy branch.
The position requires excellent facilitation, engagement and stakeholder management skills and will be able to sustain a high level of drive and commitment, have integrity and resilience, and build trust through consistent actions, values and communication.
Key responsibilities: * Policy and Strategy Development: Working with the Project Director, manage the development of policy and strategy, along with providing high-quality support for Energy Group, ensuring a consistent and effective approach to building relationships and partnerships with Traditional Owners and First Peoples' communities.

  • Relationship Building: Initiate, develop, and maintain strong relationships and networks to enable collaborative work across Energy, DEECA, other government departments and agencies.
  • Issue Identification and Resolution: Identify emerging or sensitive issues, risks, and trends impacting Energy Group objectives and priorities under Pupangarli Marnmarnepu, DEECA's Aboriginal Self-Determination Reform Strategy.
About you:
To be successful in the role, you will have;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Victorian Aboriginal cultures and societies including Traditional Owner groups.
  • Demonstrated experience in working effectively with diverse Traditional Owner groups and Victoria's First Peoples and ability to strengthen and build relationships and partnerships.
  • A strong understanding of the processes of government and governance will be considered favourably.
  • Experience in energy policy is desirable but not necessary.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications
  • A relevant university and/or higher-level qualifications such as public policy, government administration, communications, energy, economics, law, science, engineering.
  • Advanced computer skills including the ability to use or quickly learn a range of software applications such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and reporting and governance tools.
  • Experience dealing with large and complex stakeholders, particularly within the energy sector will be considered favourably.
  • A strong understanding of the processes of government and governance will be considered favourably.
  • Experience in energy policy is desirable but not necessary.
This is an ongoing position. The work location for this position is flexible within Victoria with hybrid work arrangements available.
