We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Anatomical Pathology Scientist , who under the clinical direction of the Head of Anatomical Pathology, will lead a high quality, NATA accredited, efficient diagnostic Anatomical Pathology service, that meets the clinical needs of Peter Mac patients and external customers.
You will have a Bachelor of Applied Science or equivalent and comprehensive experience in all technical aspects of histology, cytology and immunohistochemistry. This leadership position will have specific experience in staff management and supervision, ensuring that the team provides a timely service to both internal and external stakeholders. You will demonstrate the ability to develop and work within a budget, and have knowledge and senior experience in quality systems and laboratory information technology.
You will have a strong focus on a values based leadership approach. We are looking for candidates that want to encourage staff development and growth, whilst looking at opportunities to improve service delivery.
The successful applicant will have a professional approach to patient care, confidentiality and provision of pathology services. You will have an ability to communicate effectively and have a proven ability to work cooperatively with pathologists, clinicians, other senior scientists and researchers.

Victorian Department of Health has recently announced a program of reforms across the public pathology system in Victoria.
As part of these reforms, the pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital will transition to a new separate public pathology entity. The new model for delivering public pathology services will present an exciting opportunity to improve the scope, scale and reach of pathology services and testing capability to all Victorians.
As this role is with Parkvile, the successful candidate for this role will be initially employed by Parkvile. Once the new public pathology entity is fully formed, which is anticipated to be in late 2024, this position and the successful candidate’s employment (including terms and conditions of employment) will transition to the new public pathology entity. Essential Requirements
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Laboratory Medicine) or equivalent
- Proven and extensive experience (at least 10 years) in histology, cytology and immunohistochemistry within a NATA registered diagnostic Anatomical Pathology laboratory
- Expertise in supporting complex and specialised cancer diagnostic services including FISH and supporting molecular diagnostic services
- Expertise in trial and research support and diagnostics to international benchmarks Proven leadership of diagnostic laboratory teams
- Experience in leading and developing services to the highest quality benchmarks, including training systems, method and equipment validation and other quality activities to international benchmarks to satisfy international service and trial sponsor requirements
- Proven ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
- Recognised scientific training and competence relevant to the position including appropriate knowledge and experience in provision of laboratory services, quality systems, information technology, establishment and maintenance of relevant analytical methods in histology and immunohistochemistry.
- Professional approach to patient care, pathology services, confidentiality and efficiency in provision of pathology services.
- Evidence of effective communication skills and experience in training.

1. Ensuring both internal and external Anatomical Pathology services meet the clinical needs of Peter Mac patients as defined by the Head of Anatomical Pathology
- Maintaining service performance targets with existing external Anatomical Pathology providers such as that they meet Peter Mac, NPAAC and NATA , and in some instances, GCP/GLP requirements.
- Developing and maintaining efficient operations of all of the diagnostic workflows.
- Liaises with pathologists and haematologists to develop and lead the provision of high quality specialised diagnostic services.

5. Quality Assurance and Improvement
- Maintain ongoing accreditation and certification of Laboratory according to NATA (ISO 15189) and other relevant standards
- Manage, supervise and participates in internal and external quality assurance programs.
- Develops, implements andamp monitors quality systems which meet the requirements of relevant accreditation bodies
- Promptly and thoroughly reports and investigates all incidents and procedural breakdowns
- Validate new equipment and laboratory assays according to departmental and regulatory policies and standards
