About the role
We are searching for a Process Engineer to join our team at Orica's Kooragang Island manufacturing facility in Newcastle on an 18-month fixed-term contract.
Our Kooragang Island site manufactures Nitric Acid and Ammonium Nitrate products used in New South Wales mining operations and the national and international mining industries. Orica has operated at Kooragang Island for over 50 years and is committed to the health and safety of employees and minimising the impact of manufacturing activities on the community and the environment. In 2023, the Kooragang Island site completed the installation of abatement technology on the nitric acid plants to reduce the site's scope 1 + 2 emissions by 48%. Orica Kooragang Island is well along the pathway to net zero.
This critical operational role is accountable for providing chemical engineering support to the Nitrates Operations Team to enable safe, efficient, and quality production of all nitric acid plants. Reporting to the Manager of Manufacturing Technology, the successful candidate will be part of a dynamic, inclusive, and supportive team. They will work with functional leaders and specialists to further develop and execute the nitric acid and ammonium nitrate manufacturing strategies.

What you will be doing
- Ensure that safety, health, and environmental procedures are adhered to within his/her work environment.
- Provide medium term technical support for the production plants, including operations and maintenance troubleshooting.
- Conduct a weekly oversight of catalyst performance and optimisation of the operation of the manufacturing plants to meet the manufacturing goals of the Nitrates Product Line.
- Complete reporting, information gathering, and investigation of any incidents that occur within the plants associated with process safety.
- Support the execution of key strategic projects, modifications and changes within the production plants with process input and expertise.
- Develop, review, and optimise technical components of operating procedures for the production plants.
- Degree qualification in Chemical Engineering (essential).
- With at least 2 years of relevant experience as a chemical engineer in the manufacturing industry.
- Strong focus and background in process safety.
- Strong communicator, both verbal and written.
- Proven team player and collaborator, able to facilitate and find common ground in complex operational problems.
- Proven influencer, able to manage processes across multiple stakeholder groups.
- Experience in implementing process improvement initiatives.
- Experience in identifying and implementing change management initiatives.
