ABOUT THE ROLE

The position is a leadership role in the National School of Medicine and reports to the National Head of the School of Medicine. This position will lead and oversee the National curriculum review and innovation for the MD program, including effective strategic management and continuous improvement of the curriculum, and work collaboratively with the National Head of Program Development Quality and Assessment to ensure the successful accreditation of Notre Dame’s medical program. The successful candidate will participate as a member of the School leadership team in shared decision-making, ensuring that the School's goals are consonant with the University’s Objectives and strategic direction.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Strategic leadership: Develop and implement a strategic vision and plan for Medical Education that aligns with the university's vision, objects and guiding principles. Lead initiatives to enhance learning and teaching outcomes, promote research excellence and foster collaboration across disciplines.
  • Curriculum Development: Oversee the design and development of the national Medical Education curricula, working with key staff and stakeholders to ensure implementation continues to be in line with best practices in Medical Education. This role involves working collaboratively with the National Head of Program Development Quality and Assessment to continually evaluate the curricula and ensure alignment with national accreditation standards and regulatory requirements. 
  • Learning, Teaching and Scholarship: This role should foster innovation in teaching methodologies and technology-enhanced learning, and identify opportunities for interdisciplinary learning.
  • School Development: Support the professional development and advancement of faculty members engaged in Medical Education, providing mentorship to staff and collaborating with essential partners to champion appropriate training and access to resources to enhance teaching effectiveness, scholarship, and leadership skills. Promote a culture of excellence, diversity, and inclusivity among faculty members.
  • Clinical Training: Work collaboratively with Heads of Clinical years and Foundation years academics, to ensure consistency of teaching from foundation years through the clinical years. 
  • Accreditation and Compliance: Work collaboratively with the National Head of Program Development Quality and Assessment to ensure compliance with national accreditation standards with the Australian Medical Council and other accreditation bodies, regulatory requirements, and professional guidelines governing Medical Education. Assist in the preparation of reports, and responses to recommendations from accrediting bodies and external reviewers.
  • Research and Scholarship: Throughout the curriculum development, promote a culture of inquiry, scholarship, and evidence-based practice in Medical Education. Encourage faculty engagement in educational research, curriculum development projects, and dissemination of scholarly work through publications, presentations, and conferences. 
  • Stakeholder engagement: Build and maintain effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, professional associations, healthcare organizations, and community groups. Collaborate on initiatives to address workforce needs, health disparities, and population health challenges.

ABOUT YOU 

  • A medical degree and registration with AHPRA together with a College Fellowship and PhD and/or postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field and a strong record of academic achievement in a specialist area of Medical Education and practice.
  • Successful track record of higher education leadership and management and demonstrated experience of leadership and supporting staff engaged in learning and teaching.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum design, development, assessment, programme evaluation and accreditation.
  • Knowledge of contemporary developments in curriculum and assessment in a medicine or Medical Education environment.
  • Experience in change management 
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills with the ability to interact effectively with a range of academic, administrative and/or technical staff in a complex environment.
  • Able to work effectively both independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates a high level of pastoral care to students.
  • Previous experience in a health academic accreditation process such as AMC or similar.
  • Experience coordinating educational projects and delivering outcomes to schedule and budget.
