  • Full time Continuing position, located on the Camperdown and Camden Campuses at the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, University of Sydney
  • Opportunity to teach veterinary and animal science students, conduct research in your area of expertise within Veterinary Theriogenology, and engage with the school ranked #1 in the Southern Hemisphereand #26th Globally
  • Base Salary Level E $233,367 p.a. + 15% Specialist loading +17% superannuation (to a total package of $313,995 p.a).

About the opportunity

Since the founding of Veterinary science in 1910, the mission of the Sydney School of Veterinary Science (SSVS) has been to provide the nation’s best training in the health, welfare, and conservation of animals. The School is internationally accredited with the American Veterinary Medical Association, Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (UK) and the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council. Veterinary science at Sydney is ranked 1st in Australia and 26th in the world, according to the QS World University Subject Rankings 2024, and has received the top rating (5/5) for research excellence in the most recent Australian Government’s Excellence in Research for Australia.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding internationally renowned Professor of Veterinary Theriogenology who will contribute to providing excellent clinical and preclinical teaching in Veterinary Theriogenology into the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program in the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, provide advice on aspects of the Faculty’s Animal and Veterinary Bioscience and Veterinary Biology programs; and be involved in postgraduate training in higher degrees by research. The appointee will advance knowledge in aspects of Veterinary Theriogenology through an active research program, supervision of higher degree by research (HDR) students including resident training for specialisation, active involvement in the School’s clinical and fundamental research program, and other scholarly activities. It is proposed that this role would also have some clinical responsibilities for patients requiring theriogenology expertise through the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Sydney (UVTHS - a specialist and primary care small animal hospital) and provide advice and mentorship in theriogenology regarding animals attending the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden (UVTHC).

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

  • a degree in veterinary science with registration to practice as a veterinarian in NSW, and clinical experience as a specialist in Veterinary Theriogenology
  • a PhD in Veterinary Theriogenology or related topics
  • demonstrated excellence in the ability to attract research funding
  • an established track record of publications in research in Veterinary Theriogenology of international standing
  • demonstrated excellence in teaching and learning, as evidenced by participation in team teaching within an established program and experience in teaching in a variety of settings
  • a strong track record in supervising clinical residents
  • demonstrated success in designing, implementing, and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives
  • developed a network of international relationships with key academic, industry, and professional institutions, partners, and stakeholders
  • extensive experience in supervising or mentoring others and/or coordinating team activities
  • demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively across a range of media and forums
  • advanced knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the discipline and higher education sector.
  • Fellowship of the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists or equivalent specialist qualification related to Veterinary Theriogenology, enabling registration as a specialist in NSW

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • contribute to all aspects of teaching in Veterinary Theriogenology including planning, design, delivery, and evaluation of student learning
  • contribute to broader education requirements of the DVM and the Faculty’s Animal and Veterinary Bioscience and Veterinary Biology programs in keeping with your veterinary skills
  • oversee the clinical teaching in the UVTHS ensuring provision of appropriate assessment tasks, skills acquisition, clinic based tutorials, and feedback on learning to students
  • provide a shared leadership approach to sustainability of the clinical and teaching operation with a particular focus on adequate caseload and resources
  • supervise and mentor more junior veterinary staff including postgraduate students
  • lead and contribute research programs in a Veterinary Theriogenology related discipline and support other research in the Faculty focused on aspects of Veterinary Theriogenology.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a Full time Continuing position. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
