We know that almost 1 in 2 Australians are affected by cancer during their lifetime, by joining the passionate team at CCNSW you'll know that each day the work you're doing will positively impact people in your life and Australia.

CCNSW we're here for meaningful careers that feel good.

About the team

The Cancer Prevention and Advocacy Division leads the organisation's work in health promotion and cancer prevention, helping Australians make well informed choices to decrease their risk of cancer; and to create a supportive environment where healthy choices are easier choices.

Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in Australia and there are vast differences in smoking rates among different groups in our community.  The Tobacco Control Unit works to reduce disparities in smoking prevalence between disadvantaged populations and the general population; reduce exposure to second-hand smoke; and control the supply of tobacco products, other nicotine delivery devices and any products that influence smoking.

About the role:

The key purpose of this role is to develop, implement and evaluate projects to support Tobacco Cessation programs, policy and environmental changes, and advocacy campaigns and to support strategic development and planning of existing and new programs of work.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Develop and maintain an up-to-date and expert knowledge of tobacco control and cessation issues.
  • Scope, develop and implement research, policy and/or communication projects to strengthen the evidence-base for tobacco control programs and to support tobacco control advocacy campaigns.
  • Research and assist in providing advice/briefings - both written and verbal - to Cancer Council management and other key stakeholders on the meaning and implications of legislation, regulations and litigation, and proposed and introduced legislative and regulatory developments in the area of tobacco control and cessation.
  • Contribute to drafting reports and publishable journal articles relating to tobacco control programs and policy research.
  • Contribute to drafting persuasive submissions and position statements about a range of tobacco-related legal, regulatory, policy and program issues for government, law enforcement agencies and regulators and for use by other key stakeholders.
  • Coordinate cross-organisational project teams to ensure actions are planned and executed in a timely manner.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders, including other Cancer Councils, government agencies, researchers, public health organisations, community services and legal practitioners, to encourage partnerships and/or support for Cancer Council NSW's tobacco control strategies.
  • Provide technical and general information - both written and verbal - to health professionals, public health and community service organisations, and the community through reviews, briefings, seminar and conference presentations, other addresses, published journal articles, website information and social marketing strategies.
  • In conjunction with Cancer Council NSW's Policy and Advocacy Unit, support the development, implementation and evaluation of tobacco control advocacy campaigns by reviewing and summarising existing legal and scientific evidence, generating new evidence, contributing to campaign activities and conducting evaluations of state and local tobacco-related legal, regulatory and policy interventions.
  • In conjunction with the Evaluation Unit, assist the development of evaluation plans to assess the impact and effectiveness of Cancer Council NSW's tobacco control and cessation initiatives.
  • Prepare submissions to secure funding for Cancer Council NSW's tobacco control initiatives.
  • Manage and support volunteers and student interns to increase the Tobacco Control Unit's capacity.
  • Contribute to the strategic and operational plans of the Tobacco Control Unit.
