Job description

Project ManagerMake it Real

About us:

The Aboriginal Art Centre Hub of Western Australia (AACHWA) advocates on behalf of its member art centres located in regional and remote Western Australia. AACHWA delivers professional development programs for managers, boards, and artists, provides recruitment advice and services, and acts as an advocate to, and central point of contact for, Regional, State and Federal funding bodies.

Background:

International visitors to Australia spend approximately $78-$88 million per year on souvenirs bearing designs resembling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, 55-60% of which is non-Indigenous authored. This scale and continuing growth of inauthentic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander “style” art and craft products and merchandise for sale across Australia, demonstrates the exploitation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture for financial gain by non-Aboriginal people.

About the role:

Make It Real is a high-impact social enterprise currently nested within AACHWA. It is designed to disrupt the existing fake Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander souvenir and merchandise market, ensuring the participation of Western Australia’s remote and regional Aboriginal arts centres in the development of authentic products.

Reporting directly to the AACHWA CEO, the Make it RealProject Manager role will finalise product development plans, licensing and contract models and supply chain and procurement frameworks, the implementation and live testing of product plans and supply chains within the commercial market, and final delivery of a national product development resource and toolkit.

This role will also be responsible for working alongside national partners to develop vital resources for Art Centres to access product development and supply chains, in an ethical and sustainable way. This role will lead preliminary work being undertaken to investigate the potential models for the further development of the Aboriginal owned and led social enterprise model, in consultations with artists and art centres.

The Project Manager role requires an experienced individual with demonstrated skills in project management, product development, and experience in not-for-profit and social enterprise governance models, including a passion for digital solutions to supply chain management.

Key functions of the role will include:

  • Implementation of a digital Product Solution that integrates with GS1 standards and can support inventory management, product traceability and digital provenance for the production, storage, and distribution of low range (mass market) tourism product to state and national retailers.
  • Implementation and live testing of Product Plans and Supply Chains within the commercial market.
  • Implementation of education and advocacy campaign alongside product.
  • Embedding a national framework and resources.
  • Consulting with WA Aboriginal art centres about the possible development of an Aboriginal owned and governed social enterprise, and engage with legal and financial expertise.
  • Communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders and contributing to publications.
  • Utilising supply-chain innovation and automation to reset the parameters of an existing market.
  • Working with programmers or other digital consultants to implement supply chain management software (such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics), online stores, and SAM.

Who Are We Looking For?

Essential Criteria:

  • Demonstrable experience in commercial management in a merchandise setting, including supply chain management and analytics, procurement and sourcing or retail procurement.
  • Demonstrated experience and confidence in managing complex projects to completion.
  • Skills in complex budget management including experience with acquittals.
  • Ability to manage contractors and deliverables in line with project budgets and deadlines.
  • Technology/Systems: Experience implementing systems or working with teams building systems. including technology options to innovate and automate supply chains.
  • Experience with ERPs such as SAP, Oracle SCM, and Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Well-developed skills in change management.
  • Strong business development skills.
  • Strong report writing skills including experience with report writing for government and funding bodies.
  • Strategically minded – demonstrated ability to map and deliver outcomes for complex projects.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate verbally and in writing with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Previous experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in or knowledge of the Aboriginal art industry, in particular Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property, and licencing of art.
