Mental Health, Justice Health and Alcohol and Drug Services (MHJHADS) provides support to youth and adults via inpatient and outpatient settings, community health centres, justice health facilities and other community settings, including people's homes. MHJHADS aims to be socially inclusive and operate within a recovery-focussed and/or harm minimisation approach.

The Eating Disorder Program (EDP) is governed by Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), as a specialist program working with people across all ages to assess and manage Eating Disorders.

We are seeking a dynamic forward-thinking Psychiatrist to work with our Eating Disorders Program. They will, primarily be based at our new Eating Disorder Residential Unit however, there will be opportunities to work within other areas of the EDP and broader Mental health Service. The successful applicant will work closely with a General Practitioner (GP), Nurse practitioner and specialist multidisciplinary team to provide care for people with Eating Disorders.

CAMHS are a specialist inpatient and community based mental health assessment and treatment services for children and adolescents experiencing moderate to severe mental illness/disorder with significant functional impairment, associated complex needs and risk. CAMHS also governs a number of specialist teams. Services include;

  • CAMHS Hospital Liaison Team
  • CAMHS Community teams
  • Specialist Youth Mental Health Outreach (SYMHO)
  • Adolescent Mental Health Outreach Service (AMOS)
  • Perinatal and Infant Mental Health Services (PIMHS)
  • Adolescent Intensive Home Treatment Team (AIHTT)
  • Eating Disorders Program
  • Eating Disorders Residential Treatment Centre
  • Child and Adolescent Unit (CAU)

The successful applicant will have specialist experience in Psychiatry with an interest in Eating Disorders. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in the mandatory administrative, governance and training requirements of medical officers within the Division. Emphasis on recovery focus and person-centred care are essential.

The position holder is expected to operate within the Public Sector Management Act (1994), the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct and the professional requirements specified by the appointee's Specialist College. The position will be accountable and responsible to the Clinical Director of CAMHS through an Individual Strengths, Engagement and Development Plan.

Duties:

  1. Provide direct psychiatric services in a variety of settings.

  2. Teach and supervise psychiatry trainees and medical students.

  3. Provide high level clinical leadership to multi-disciplinary teams and in particular:

Provide expert psychiatric assessment and management of EDP participants and expert psychiatric opinion and consultation on the clinical work of the MDT

  1. Participate in the development, implementation and ongoing review of the recovery plans for persons using the service.

  2. Liaise and collaborate with medical practitioner, consumers, carers, voluntary and government and non-government agencies concerned with patients care.

  3. Participation in administration and clinical governance activities and the Psychiatrist after-hours oncall roster for CHS.

  4. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Canberra Hospital Expansion Project - CHS is constructing a new critical services building called 'Building 5' which is a 44,000sqm nine storey building specifically designed to deliver state-of-the-art acute clinical services at the Canberra Hospital. Building 5 is the largest healthcare infrastructure project undertaken in the Territory's history and it represents the largest clinical and operational change program to ever be implemented by Canberra Health Services. Building 5 integrates with a number of existing buildings at the Campus including Building 1 and Building 2, to facilitate a seamless public thoroughfare, patient transportation and back-of-house logistics distribution.

North Canberra Hospital - As of 3 July 2023 Calvary Public Hospital Bruce transitioned to CHS and became North Canberra Hospital. The transition will deliver a health system networked under one provider and will provide increased workforce opportunities for staff at both CHS sites. The ACT Government will be building a new northside hospital on the existing hospital campus in Bruce to meet the growing health care needs of our community, with construction to commence mid-decade providing more beds, increased services, and increased career opportunities.
