About the Team

This position is a key role in the Red Lily Primary Health Care team that provides primary health care to more than a 1000 people in the West Arnhem region. Engagement and collaboration with other communities and teams within Red Lily and beyond will be necessary to ensure that the communities receive high quality services and achieve optimal outcomes. The role will work closely with the Regional Midwife and Women's Health Educator.

About the role

You will work collaboratively with the remote health centre teams, health service providers and key community stakeholders to ensure high quality best practice comprehensive child health services for children and families living in the West Arnhem service delivery area (not including Maningrida).

You will be part of the Red Lily Primary Health Care team and will assist remote community-based staff to deliver quality and comprehensive Child and adolescent health programs and care. This will be achieved through regular remote site visits, and a combination of capacity building and management of caseloads where relevant. Coordination with other communities and teams within Red Lily, as well as external clinicians and service providers, will be necessary to ensure that the communities receive high quality services and achieve optimal outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Improve Child and adolescent health by building and maintaining the capacity of primary health care staff in the delivery of comprehensive and culturally safe health services and community based programs for young people.
  • Work in collaboration with the remote Primary Health Centre teams to provide clinical services and care relating to Child and adolescent health that includes key screening programs for children, as directed by the Primary Health Care Director.
  • Monitor the Child and adolescent health program/s and portfolios at each remote community, utilising KPI data and reporting, with a priority focus on effective program delivery for children aged 0-5, focusing on growth, development.
  • Mentor and support the ongoing professional development of primary health care practitioners in the delivery of Child and adolescent health programs in remote communities; providing clinical oversight and expertise.
  • Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces, with particular reference to the suite of CARPA standard treatment protocol manuals and other relevant NT clinical protocols and standards
  • Facilitate, promote and provide training to support the delivery of child health services for primary health care nurses Aboriginal Health Practitioners and midwives.
  • Coordinate the development and provision of culturally appropriate health promotion and health literacy programs to children and their families, with local remote staff and key stakeholders.
  • Participate in the review of best practice guidelines, Continuous Quality Improvement and Aboriginal Health Key Performance Indicators.
  • Manage physical resources within an allocated budget for the program.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and review of the Organisational plan.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential:

  1. Hold current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority.
  2. Extensive knowledge and experience in remote clinical practice as it relates to Child and adolescent health, and an understanding of development and review process for clinical practice guidelines.
  3. Knowledge of Aboriginal Child and Adolescent health needs and priorities, and remote primary health care nursing practice.
  4. An ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures with a demonstrated understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal health cultural issues; cultural safety and social determinants issues.
  5. Demonstrated experience in development and delivery of education and training to strengthen and sustain a culture of continuous learning.
  6. Knowledge and experience in implementation of Primary Health Care programs and the relevant legislation governing work practice in the remote setting.
  7. Proven leadership ability and high-level communication skills to effectively engage with a range of stakeholders in the remote primary health care setting.
  8. Understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal health, drivers of health inequality, principles of primary health care and relevant legislation governing work practice in the Northern Territory.
  9. Eligibility for an NT manual driver’s license, and a willingness and ability to travel on a weekly basis to West Arnhem communities (excluding Maningrida) by either 4x4 or light aircraft and stay for up to a maximum of 4-5 days as required.
  10. Highly developed interpersonal, complex problem solving, written, verbal and IT communication skills.

Desirable skills:

  1. Post Graduate qualifications in Child Health.
  2. Hold post graduate qualifications in relevant qualifications in child health, education, sexual health and workplace assessment and training.
  3. Demonstrated experience working as a Remote Area Nurse in a remote indigenous context.
  4. Demonstrated ability and experience in the management of a multidisciplinary team.
  5. Appropriate post graduate qualification in Public Health / Primary Health Care or additional certificates in Child Health, Emergency, Midwifery, or Mental Health.
  6. Business-related qualification.

Position specific requirements:

  • Hold (or eligible for) an NT manual drivers’ license
  • NLC Land Council work permit
  • Willingness to travel by air and 4WD to remote communities, preparedness to relieve other nursing positions by arrangement.
  • Employment with Red Lily Health will be conditional on the employee providing NT Working with Children Check and satisfactory police clearance.
