Job description

The Queensland Magistrates Court plays a vital role in the delivery of justice services. It is in this jurisdiction that the majority of Queenslanders first come into contact with the judicial system. Magistrates Courts deal with approximately 96 per cent of all criminal cases, handling the highest volume of court cases of any Queensland Court. Most civil actions are heard in the Magistrates Court jurisdiction.
Dalby is a Magistrates and District Court registry consisting of an AO6 Registrar, 2 x AO3 Court Services Officers and 2 x AO2 Administrative Officers. Dalby is serviced by a resident Magistrate who circuits to Chinchilla, Taroom and Oakey Magistrates Courts. A District Court judge circuits to Dalby approximately five times per year.
The magistrate conducts court 2-3 days per week in Dalby, 4 days per month in Chinchilla, and 1 day per month in Oakey.

The Registrar of Dalby Courthouse provides skilled management and leadership in the operation of the Queensland Courts Service registry including achieving success in resource management, community engagement and service improvement. The role supports the judiciary in the delivery of Justice and ensures that the appropriate efficient processes and systems are in place to deliver equitable services to all court users. The Registrar reports to the Senior Operations Manager (Toowoomba Cluster).
People who work within the courts environment can be exposed to some harrowing and distressing circumstances. Exposure to those circumstances can result in people experiencing vicarious trauma. You may be exposed to information about offending behaviours, criminal activity and other explicit, distressing or offensive content. Court Services Queensland has a range of strategies in place to help prevent vicarious trauma and support staff who experience vicarious trauma as a result of their work. However, personal resilience and individual coping strategies are an important factor. You should consider this carefully before applying for the role.
Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strong effective leadership of the Dalby Magistrates Court;
  • Implement and drive policy and procedural reform with particular reference to promoting innovative and consistent policies and procedures relevant to the courts and the wider region/s;
  • Oversee the management of registry workloads while fostering and driving a culture of excellence in service delivery, innovation and continuous improvement;
  • Build and maintain professional and collaborative relationships with judicial officers, courts' users, community groups and stakeholders to provide effective service delivery and support;
  • Develop strategies to improve the understanding of the justice system with the local community;
  • Maintain effective workforce planning, performance management, staff development and mentoring frameworks within the registry;
  • Ensure the integrity of data is maintained on Courts' databases including the Queensland Wide Interlinked Court (QWIC) system and Civil Listing and Information Management system (CLAIMS);
  • Undertake financial, resource and risk management processes;
  • Perform statutory duties of Clerk of the Court and Registrar as required;
  • Represent the department on committees and at meetings.
