About the role

As a member of the HSE Department, the Austal Rehabilitation Specialist is responsible for worker injury management, rehabilitation, return to work and workers’ compensation complex claims management across Austal Australia sites. Working alongside the Austal Case Manager – Injury Management and Injury Management Administrator, the Rehabilitation Specialist will actively reduce the organisational impact of workplace injury through specialist advice. As an allied health professional this position has expertise in addressing the physical, psychosocial and/or workplace barriers that may prevent an injured worker returning to work. The Rehabilitation Specialist will also work with the wider HSE Team to assist with the development of targeted health and safety initiatives to address employee wellbeing and injury trends across the organisation.

Key objectives & responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with the Austal Case Manager to identify high-risk referrals and any barriers impacting worker recovery.
  • Adopt a person-centred trauma informed approach to the management of complex workplace injury.
  • Liaising with workers, insurers, medical practitioners, and employer representatives to achieve outcomes appropriate for all parties.
  • Proactively identifies the need to arrange, facilitate and participate in an outcome focussed medical case conferencing.
  • Monitor the company performance of injury management. Provide recommendations on Workers Compensation and Early intervention Program performance outcomes.
  • Utilise their allied health skills and knowledge to conduct workplace assessments (including ergonomic assessments), create and monitor rehabilitation or return-to-work plans, create suitable duties plans, conduct job analysis, and provide advice about job modification to effectively manage psychosocial barriers and return-to-work.
  • Support with the development and implementation of workplace physical and psychological injury reduction programs, in conjunction with the HSE Advisors within the business.

Required Skills / Experience / Attributes:

  • Physiotherapist, AHPRA Registration
  • Drivers Licence and car.
  • Broad knowledge of workers compensation laws and compliance obligations with a core focus on legislative knowledge and work capacity decisions.
  • Relevant experience in an injury management (clinic experience desirable) and/or return to work role (minimum 4 years).
  • Experience in managing complex Return to Work cases through early identification of Return-to-Work barriers and implementation of effective strategies.
  • Comfortable working independently & as part of a team.
  • Exceptional time management and organisation skills.
  • Confident communicator, who excels in developing relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Hold a Construction safety induction (white card).
