Research and Policy Advisor – Moranbah


An exciting opportunity exists for a permanent full-time Research and Policy Advisor to join our team in Moranbah. Located approximately 200km inland from Mackay. Moranbah is a mining town that has a strong community focus, and prides itself in its rich history and various recreational activities. Reporting to the Executive Manager Advocacy and External Affairs, this position is responsible for providing support to the Executive Manager and broader Council by identifying opportunities for advocacy on government policy, reviewing statistical data and conducting research to inform Council decisions. Additionally, the role coordinates Councils’ response to Environmental Impact Assessments for mining and renewable projects, supports engagement with First Peoples and prepares submissions to State and Federal government policy or legislation. The successful candidate will join one of Queensland’s most dynamic and respected advocacy teams in influencing change that ensures the future of our 17 unique communities.

For this position we can offer:

  • Base salary $104,551.60 per annum (Stream A, Level 7), plus allowances
  • Nominally 72.5 hours per fortnight – Monday to Friday
  • 5 weeks annual leave @ 17.5% loading
  • RDO’s in accordance with Council Policy

About You:
We are seeking an enthusiastic person who possesses:
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills to find value and understand what is in the data.
  • Research, fact-checking and validation skills to ensure valid data sources and verify accuracy.
  • Focus and organisation to work on multiple tasks and projects.
  • High level written communication and research skills.
  • Ability to identify trends and make recommendations.
  • Ability to understand the needs and expectations of both government bodies and Council.
  • Ability to source funding opportunities that are well suited to Council.
  • Ability to write in a persuasive fashion.
  • Knowledge of Local Government processes and practices.
  • Ability to interpret legislation and government policy to inform decision making.
  • Experience working with First Peoples on Indigenous Land Use Agreements and Native Title.
  • Good interpersonal skills to build relationships with teams from across internal departments.
Qualifications:
  • A degree qualification in a relevant discipline or related field or demonstrated equivalent experience is highly desirable.
  • The role requires the possession of a current C Class Open Australian Drivers Licence (mandatory).
