The Opportunity

The Bacterial Respiratory Infectious Disease Group (BRIDG) has a major focus on ear and lung disease, and aims to deliver strategies to prevent, diagnose and treat bacterial ear and lung infections to reduce the global burden of disease.
We now have an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant to join this high performing team and conduct high quality research. In this varied role, you will have the opportunity to conduct animal experiments, assist with experimental design, ethical compliance, and prepare pilot data for grant applications contributing to the ongoing success of the team.
Some of your duties will include but not be limited to:
  • Processing of animal blood and tissues for microbiological and immunological analyses.
  • Conduct, analyse, and interpret research results and report them to supervisor in regular meetings.
  • Run assays (bioplex, FACS, ELISPOT, ELISA) and high throughput molecular assays (qPCR).
  • Apply knowledge of ethical guidelines and adhere to research protocols and/or requirements (e.g. PC2 adherence, OGTR).
  • Present data and contribute as required in lab/company meetings, participating in peer review of research, etc.
Conveniently based at our state-of-the-art facilities at Perth Children's Hospital, this role will be offered on a full-time basis for 12 months.
About You
The successful applicant will hold a BSc (Hons) or Masters in appropriate disciplines such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or Immunology and have a recent certificate and experience in animal handling.
Your application must also be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research methodologies, particularly microbiology and immunology.
  • Considerable animal handling experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent IT and data management skills.
  • Excellent analytical and organisational skills, and ability to maintain accurate research records.
