The Role
The Tuberculosis Research Group at the Centenary Institute is seeking to hire a Research Assistant to assist in the investigation of the immune response induced by different adjuvant and antigen vaccine formulations against Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in the mouse model. The research will focus on head-to-head analysis of immune responses after vaccination and protection against M. tuberculosis infection and will be performed in association with similar studies by collaborators located throughout the world using animal models and human studies.
Successful candidates will work within a highly interactive group of world-renowned scientists investigating multiple infectious diseases of human importance and vaccine development. The Tuberculosis Research Group includes immunologists, vaccine and drug developers, microbiologists and clinicians. The position provides an excellent opportunity to experience multi-national collaborations, and an understanding of the requirements for vaccine development. The position is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, Division of Allergy, Immunology and Transplantation (USA).
Responsibilities
As part of the role, you will be expected to assist with and perform:
- flow cytometry, molecular and protein assays
- in vitro immunological and cellular assays
- in vivo studies in an M. tb infection mouse model including injections, infection, health checks, tail bleeds, and necropsy
- general laboratory duties e.g., ordering consumables, reagent preparation, maintenance of laboratory equipment and workstations.
About You
- Hold a BSc (Honours) in immunology, or microbiology or a BSc with laboratory experience in immunology or infectious diseases.
- Experience with infection studies in small animals, animal handling and necropsy.
- Have basic knowledge of computer software required to perform tasks to achieve experimental outcomes.
- Experience in cellular immunological studies including flow cytometry, in vitro assays of cellular immune responses and cytokine and antibody assays is highly desirable.
- Experience working in a Physical Containment 3 (Biosafety Level 3) laboratory is desirable
Terms of Appointment
An initial 2 year contract will be offered, renewable subject to funding.
