  • Level A, full-time appointment on a fixed term basis for 3 years
  • Base salary range: $ $76,686 - $103,202 p.a. plus 17% superannuation

About the team

The School of Biological Sciences is a large, multidisciplinary School with over 80 high-calibre staff delivering world-class education and research programs to approximately 600 undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students and is responsible for the supervision of ~100 PhD students. The School is research-intensive with expertise in the disciplines of Computational Biology, Ecology & Conservation, Evolutionary Biology, Neuroscience and Science Communication.

About the opportunity

We are seeking a marine biologist with relevant experience to support research focused on understanding the effects of warming and marine heatwaves on kelp forests, at the genomic, ecological and ecosystem level.

You will support research activities based on a combination of field collections across environmental gradients, cultivation experiments and application of cutting-edge techniques in genomics and transcriptomics.

To be considered for this opportunity, you will have:

  • A PhD in a relevant field
  • Highly developed research experience with kelp genomics, culturing kelp early and juvenile life-stages
  • Knowledge and experience with Australian and NE Atlantic kelp ecosystems is desirable
  • Experience with relevant laboratory practices and the latest techniques in kelp genomics, including analysis and interpretation of genomic data
  • Experience with planning and executing fieldwork and/or experiments on kelp
  • Experience with maintaining kelp cultures, planning and executing culture experiments
  • Broad Knowledge of kelp ecology
  • Experience with culturing kelp early life-stages
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative research team and to build effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including demonstrated ability to prepare and interpret scientific and technical reports, to publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, and to communicate technical material to a broad audience
  • Demonstrated or considerable skills in analysis of ecological and genomic data using state-of-the-art techniques and software

Note: Substantial travel and work in Norway must be anticipated for the successful applicant.
