The opportunity:
The Research and Development Team/Genetics & Genomics Innovation at VCGS is a dynamic new team focused on bringing cutting-edge technologies and innovative test options to our clinical and research services. We are looking for a Team Leader – R&D who will play a crucial role in shaping the future of genetic and genomic testing.
About the Role:
As the Team Leader – R&D, you will:
- Collaborate with clinical variant curators, bioinformaticians, lab technicians, scientists, geneticists, and counsellors.
- Work closely with the Head of R&D to scope and coordinate new projects and manage stakeholder relationships.
- Oversee the implementation of new testing assays and technologies, ensuring seamless integration with our in-house automation systems.
- Provide leadership in staff training, leave scheduling, SOP writing, and general lab duties.
- Manage cost centers, staff leave approvals, and contract renewals.
- Foster strong working relationships across VCGS laboratories, particularly with the Nucleic acid Extraction and Sequencing Technologies (NEST), Clinical Bioinformatics, and Clinical Genomics teams.

What we need from you:
- Minimum five years working experience in a fast-paced, NATA accredited diagnostic laboratory or equivalent work experience
- A Diploma/BSc/Honours or equivalent in related discipline
- Excellent knowledge of laboratory and molecular techniques as well as the ability to troubleshoot
- Highly developed technical and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility to adapt to the needs of VCGS.
- Capability to work under pressure when workloads are high or timelines are tight.
