Your new role
The Curtin for Agribusiness Profitability Initiative within the Centre for Crop and Disease Management at Curtin University is a research group that brings together university expertise in data science, geographical information systems, farming systems, agribusiness, as well as spatial modelling, machine learning, computer vision, optimization and operation and econometrics. We have strong industry partnerships and focus on research to overcome key challenges for broadacre agricultural and horticulture through data visualisation, development of decision support for farmers, agronomists, and industry professionals. Our goal is to use data and advanced analytics to underpin sustainable agricultural production by improving return on investment and management of risks associated with farming.
In this research-focused position, you will further develop the research and industry engagement skills critically important for your future career and you will use your data capture, synthesis, geospatial, data visualisation and data analytical skills to create new capabilities that address industry related problems. Data sources may come from proximal sensors, data loggers, remote and/or proximal sensing imagery, industry records or ground surveys.
Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will engage with industry to co-design solutions to problems they face and develop questions for further research. You will create visual, data driven outputs to assist farm businesses to make critical decisions using agricultural data in an effective and timely manner.

Selection Criteria:
- PhD in Applied Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Biological Modelling, or an equivalent field
- A knowledge of either proximal or remote sensing applicable to agriculture or biological systems
- Demonstrated geospatial experience with ESRI products (ideally ArcGIS) and other open-source GIS software
- Demonstrated experience with modern analytic platforms such as Python or R
- Excellent oral and written skills including the ability to communicate statistical results to non- statisticians and industry representatives
- Experience in data processing, data management and data visualisation
- Evidence of familiarity or experience with High Performance Computer facilities
- A commitment to research as evidenced by peer reviewed publications
- An understanding of experimental design as applied to biology or agricultural research
- Experience in training or supervising students and industry personnel.
