About the Role

The Research Fellow will join a dynamic project team focused on exploring the evolution and maintenance of resistance in natural populations, aiming to potentially reduce pesticide use and promote economic and biodiversity benefits. Led by ARC Laureate Prof. Wedell at the School of BioSciences, the project applies sexual selection theory to predict insecticide resistance evolution in flies, challenging assumptions about resistance costs and exploring pre-existing variants maintained by balancing selection. 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • You are expected to significantly contribute towards the research effort of the team and to develop your research expertise with an increasing degree of autonomy.
  • Under the guidance and support of Senior Academic staff conduct internationally competitive research, resulting in publications in high impact journals.
  • Contribute to and publish academic papers and other scholarly outputs to a high academic standard in accordance with the research expectations of the University of Melbourne
  • Actively participate in research seminars and conferences to disseminate research findings as opportunities arise.
  • Contribute to the preparation, or where appropriate individual preparation of research proposal submissions to internal or external funding bodies as relevant.

Who We Are Looking For

You will possess a proven ability for independent research, evidenced by a strong publication record in relevant areas, alongside proficiency in preparing research reports and manuscripts for publication. Additionally, you should demonstrate a strong desire and capacity to advance your academic research career.

You will also have:

  • Completion of a PhD in zoology, molecular or evolutionary biology or a related discipline
  • Experience in bioinformatic analyses
  • Experience in genome sequencing and annotation
  • Experience with Drosophila model and genome

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
