Research Fellow - Materials Engineering

Overview:Full-time, Fixed Term Position for 2 YearsSalary Academic Level B + 17% Superannuation and Flexible Working ArrangementsBased at the Melbourne CBD campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the UniversityAbout The PositionRMIT is on the lookout for a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team for collaborative research in biomaterials and scaffold development for nerve regeneration, focusing on cortical neurons derived from human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (hiPSCs). This interdisciplinary project, conducted in partnership with the Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI) and the Neely Lab at the University of Sydney, aims to fabricate biofilms patterned with neurogenic regions to facilitate axon growth. Funded by the NHMRC and supported by the School of Physics and Physics Foundation, the project requires expertise in neurophotonics and interaction with various scientific disciplines. Responsibilities include supervising students and contributing to team activities and related projects.To be successful in this position, you’ll have:Demonstrated expertise in biomaterials design, scaffold fabrication, tissue engineering and characterisation techniques.Experience designing and implementing micropatterning strategies for controlling cell behaviour, interaction, and tissue development.Experience in vitro cell culture and potentially tissue histology techniques.Proficiency in a range of characterisation techniques such as SEM, confocal microscopy, mechanical testing, and biochemical assaysStrong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research team.Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of presenting research findings at scientific conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.Prior experience in nerve regeneration or tissue engineering research is highly desirable.Preferrable: PhD in Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, or related disciplines focusing on biomaterials and tissue engineering.Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children and National Police Check.About the School of EngineeringThe School of Engineering is one of the largest Engineering Schools in Australia. This transition to Departments forms part of a new strategic direction for the School. This will see an increasing emphasis on engagement with industry and other external partners. The School is developing new industry led degrees, where our students learn whilst working for companies, as well as innovation hubs where we will co-locate industry partners, our research teams and our undergraduate students. Over the next three to five years the School of Engineering will support these new strategic plans through investments in new facilities. This will include reimaging our teaching laboratories, where we will use new digital technologies to enhance the student experience, as well as research labs where partnerships with industry will enable us to maintain leading research facilities. The STEM College is also developing plans for a large new budling in the Melbourne City Campus, and the School of Engineering is expected to take significant space in this new building.RMIT is a global university and the School of Engineering has students and research partners across South East Asia and Europe.
