About the RoleThe Research Fellow role at the University of Melbourne's Population Interventions Unit focuses on building, evolving, and maintaining simulation models within the Scalable Health Intervention Evaluation (SHINE) Program. This position requires expertise in computer science or a related field to synthesize data inputs into policy-relevant information for decision-making on preventive health interventions. The ideal candidate, reporting to Dr. Tim Wilson, will possess a PhD qualification, strong communication skills, and experience in Simulation Modelling or related fields.Your responsibilities will include:
  • Build, maintain and run proportional multistate lifetable simulation models in Python
  • As requested and practicable build, maintain and run other simulation models (e.g. Markov, agent-based) in Python, RUST and other computing languages
  • Validation and calibration of simulation models
  • Analyses of already collected data to generate inputs to simulation models (e.g. regression analyses on survey data)
Who We Are Looking ForYou will excel in this role with your strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with a proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively to achieve project goals and meet deadlines. Your effective communication skills, coupled with attention to detail and a commitment to thorough documentation, ensure clarity. Additionally, your curiosity and dedication to documenting code enhance your contributions to the team.You will also have:
  • A PhD or near completion of PhD in computer or data science (or closely related discipline (e.g. mathematics), with a strong ability to rapidly upskill in computer Simulation Modelling)
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team to achieve project goals and meet deadlines.
  • Experience using at least one statistical and/or programming language (e.g. R, STATA, Python).
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel.
