About the Role
The research-focused component will be based in the Anterior Eye, Clinical Trials and Research Translation Unit within the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Melbourne, led by Professor Laura Downie. The research undertaken in this Unit combines discovery research, clinical studies, and evidence synthesis and implementation science, as the basis for improving patient outcomes. A major focus is undertaking clinical studies of the ocular surface.

The incumbent will be involved in various studies, and also contribute to wider research activity in the Unit. The education-focused component relates to contriburing as part of an established group of clinical teachers involved in advanced clinical training in the flagship four-year Doctor of Optometry (OD) program. The incumbent will be expected to be involved in the delivery of preclinical/practical classes and prepare high quality learning materials for students across all four year levels of the OD course. 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide teaching support to students working in the preclinical environment as they learn optometric techniques
  • Work collaboratively with other teaching staff to deliver preclinical sessions that are integrated and aligned with learning outcomes of Doctor of Optometry preclinical subjects and streams
  • Work closely with the lead academic demonstrator to support and coordinate logistics and teaching materials required for preclinical teaching sessions
  • Establish strong and effective teaching relationships with students and assist them through demonstration/refinement of their techniques, to achieve clinical competency

Who We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will excel in time management and organisational skills, effectively coordinating workflow, prioritizing tasks, and balancing competing demands. They will possess strong interpersonal skills, positively interacting and cooperating with students and staff, alongside excellent written and verbal communication skills for delivering briefings and articulating feedback.

You will also have:

  • An optometric qualification with therapeutic endorsement, and rights to practice in Australia as an optometrist
  • Optometric skills demonstrated by at least 3 years of registered experience
  • Excellent teaching skills and commitment to quality teaching, including the ability to stimulate interest and enable students to understand complex concepts
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills, including demonstrated experience in co-ordinating workflow, prioritising tasks, meeting deadlines and effectively balancing competing demands.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
