As an area within the department, Youth Justice is committed to the demonstration of the departmental values at all times; serve the community, work together, act with integrity, respect other people and make it happen.

Youth justice custodial centres accommodate young people aged 10-18 years who have been remanded or sentenced by the Criminal Division of the Children's Court, and some 18-21 year olds sentenced by Adult Courts to a youth justice custodial centre.

The two Youth Justice custodial precincts in Victoria are managed by the Department of Justice and Community Safety:

  • Parkville Youth Justice Precinct is in the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Parkville, approximately five kilometres from the central business district.
  • Cherry Creek Youth Justice Precinct located to the west of Werribee.

What does the Restorative Practitioner do?

As the Restorative Practitioner, you will facilitate restorative practice processes and build restorative practice capacity across the two Youth Justice custodial precincts. This includes working with operational staff and young people to develop and implement restorative practice processes that establish, maintain and repair (or re-set) healthy relationships with, and between, young people and operational staff

There are 2 available positions with one based at the Parkville Youth Justice Precinct and the other at the Cherry Creek Youth Justice Precinct.

What skills should a Restorative Practitioner have?

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • experience in, and sound knowledge of, restorative practices, principles and processes
  • experience preparing and facilitating group meetings, including in circumstances involving conflict between parties
  • experience building workforce expertise and practice capability
  • experience in mediation, social work, community work, and/or the criminal justice system.

A tertiary qualification in psychology, social work, human services, criminal justice or related field is also desirable.

You will be required to obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC) to be maintained by the employee for the period of employment.
