About the Position 

The Retail Assistant will work with the Retail Manager to deliver high level customer service to our visitors through keen knowledge of our products and makers, with a focus on achieving sales, while maintaining excellent visual merchandising and stock management.

This is a casual position with between 5 - 15 hours per week. The hours we are open are:

Wednesday – Saturday 9:45am – 3:15pm
Sunday – 9:45am – 2:15pm

Position Responsibilities

The Retail Assistant will have responsibility for POS, customer service, processing online orders, packing and shipping, cleaning and other support duties as required.

You will be responsible for: 

• ensuring customer satisfaction through excellent sales service
• providing information and advice about products and designers
• demonstrating a high-level knowledge of Design Tasmania’s retail stock and designers
• maintaining outstanding store presentation and visual merchandising standards
• achieving sales goals
• assisting with the sales process by maintaining a fully stocked store
• helping to maintain accurate and up-to-date records of stock and sales
• ensuring compliance with all Design Tasmania’s policies and procedures.

Position Requirements:

• Deliver a Store experience aligned with Design Tasmania’s mission, vision and visitor experience 
• Assist in achieving daily sales targets 
• Maintain a high standard of store merchandising  
• Other duties as requested commensurate with the position.

• Demonstrated attention to detail and a commitment to complete assigned tasks 
• Ability to operate independently in line with agreed objectives
• Ability to multitask and prioritise effectively within tight timelines
• An ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and work effectively under pressure

Selection Criteria

Essential: 

• Relevant experience in retail customer service
• Demonstrated ability to achieve retail sales targets and customer experience objectives 
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple customers in a retail environment
• Ability to plan, organise and prioritise tasks at a high level
• Commitment to promote and follow safety protocols
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team
• Positive attitude with the flexibility to be adaptable to changing circumstances. 

Desirable:

An understanding of a small arts organisation with a strong interest in design, craft, and art.

The successful candidate will have great communication skills - the ability to share the story of our unique Tasmanian design culture, designer and makers and their products. Retail staff are engaged with Design Tasmania’s Artistic Program and are representatives of the company.

The Retail Assistant must be highly efficient at cash handling and POS experience with a flair for merchandising and attention to detail. You must be flexible and available to work our weekend roster and some weekdays. Experience in stock management, merchandising, inventory control, freight and presentation of products would be an advantage.
