Employment Opportunity: Safety Advisor.An excellent opportunity is available for a Safety Advisor to join the People, Safety and Culture department at Australia's pre-eminent biomedical research institute.About the positionThe Safety team sits within the People, Safety and Culture team at WEHI. The safety team provides advice and training to staff and students on laboratory and general safety, as well as ensuring WEHI remains compliant with legislation and standards governing research facilities and the use of chemicals and biologicals.The Safety Advisor is responsible for the provision of a professional, quality service. The Advisor will provide advice, coaching and service delivery to staff and students regarding safety matters and support a range of safety activities including advice and training related to chemical safety, maintaining employee records and assist with Workday system input, regular inspections of institute facilities and contribute to the development of new safety-related resources and training programmes The Advisor will be a first point of contact for any external and internal staff queries about safety matters and will need to be able to organise workload, prioritise duties and manage deadlines, This role works across a broad range of stakeholders including academic, professional services staff, students and contractors to deliver an exceptional and responsive service. The successful candidate will work closely with the Chemical Safety Officer and requires significant experience working with chemicals in a laboratory environment and understanding of chemical safety.Selection CriteriaPersonal qualitiesA demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a small team and handle sensitive and confidential issues discreetly.Proactive can-do attitude with a high level of initiative.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Ability to quickly establish respectful and productive working relationships with managers, employees and studentsStrong organisational skills with the ability to balance workload and conflicting priorities.Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.Knowledge and SkillsBachelor of Science with Honours or Masters with laboratory experience.Experience in the handling, storage, disposal of chemicals (including cryogenics) and understanding of reactivity is essential.An understanding of relevant legislation and standards related to laboratory safety, particularly chemicals, scheduled drugs and poisons.Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver effective training material to a broad range of people, including research staff, students and contractorsProficiency in the utilisation of management databases and Microsoft Office programs in particular ExcelExperience in the development of online training modules and assessment toolsCompetency in data management and analysis for assessment and reportingCertificate IV in in Occupational Health and Safety or other relevant qualification/s would be highly regardedTerms of appointmentThis position is an ongoing role in a full-time capacity. Salary is Professional Services Employee Level 6 ($88,811 - $96,133).
