The Opportunity
  • Supportive, rewarding, inclusive and truly flexible environment
  • Innovative and collaborative workplace with fantastic flexibility
  • Join CSIRO - Australia's premier research organisation

CSIRO is Australia’s largest scientific research organisation and one of the largest and most diverse scientific organisations in the world. CSIRO’s work touches every aspect of Australian life: from the molecules that build life to the molecules in space. Working from sites across the nation and around the globe, CSIRO’s staff are focused on providing new ways to improve the quality of life, as well as the economic and social performance of several industry sectors through research and development.

The Scientific Computing (SC) Group within the Information Management & Technology (IMT) function provides end-to-end technology platforms ranging from corporate IT systems through to leading edge high performance data processing tools and platforms. The SC teams manage and support an edge to cloud computational workloads and data fabric, that includes several high performance computing clusters, multiple hyperscale public cloud tenancies, mass storage and high performance tiered storage infrastructure with a national footprint. The group also provides hosting services for CSIRO’s corporate applications through provision of a highly versatile and robust virtualised platform, alongside support for organisational data management practices.

In joining the SC team, you will have the opportunity to work with this breadth of technology, and contribute to IMT’s forward strategy including bringing innovation to how our team provides technology services in support of the digital operations of CSIRO. The SC group also has a significant range of activities that provide support to CSIRO science teams in promoting best of breed implementation, uptake and adoption of our platforms across the areas of data processing, code optimisation, application support and software delivery. The group is highly customer-focussed and operates closely in partnership with all areas of CSIRO research.

We are looking for a new member to join the Scientific Computing Data team and help us with developing and automating complex workflows and data migrations, which require significant computational power and big-data handling. You will work closely with the rest of the team to make the most of the SC platforms and infrastructure. This is a chance to be part of a professional and challenging environment, where you can support various applications and infrastructure that enable cutting edge-science.

CSIRO is a great place to expand your knowledge of technology capabilities in various settings, such as on-prem, public cloud and partners. You can benefit from our professional development, such as training, certification and exposure to Scientific problem domains.

Your duties will include:
  • Provide technical advice relating to Storage systems that host data and integrated technology services, standards and procedures to team members, management and business owners.
  • Design, develop, test and deliver the capabilities across multiple storage infrastructure platforms.
  • Adapt and/or develop original techniques/procedures/equipment/concepts/ideas in support of existing and further research.
  • Diagnosis of operational incidents; root cause analysis and remediations.
  • Encounter problems where methods are not defined and use initiative to seek new approaches to meet client needs and improve the services provided.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, to carry out tasks autonomously.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within your team, the business unit and across CSIRO, to reach objectives.
  • Set-up and/or maintain effective and efficient work teams, allocate and manage resources and undertake staff performance management and career development.
