Job description

The Rockhampton Grammar School is seeking to appoint an experienced Outdoor Education Teacher (Secondary). This a full time, permanent position with a negotiable start date. 

The Outdoor Education Teacher will be responsible for facilitating and planning/co-planning Outdoor Education, Certificate II Outdoor Recreation, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and other programmes at The Rockhampton Grammar School and the Ritamada Outdoor Education Campus near Emu Park on the Capricorn Coast.

Competitive salary of up to $142,765.21, plus super and benefits. 
(Note: this pay-scale is reflective of the applicants teaching experience, including Highly Accomplished (HAT) and Teacher Lead (TL) and is in accordance with the RGS EBA).

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the development of Outdoor Education, Certificate II Outdoor Recreation and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme programmes;
  • Lead and co-lead activity sessions, camp programmes and extended camps in the Outdoor Education programme;
  • Lead and co-lead theoretical, practical day classes, day expeditions and extended expeditions in the Certificate II Outdoor Recreation programme;
  • Assess the academic and practical skill progress of Certificate II participants and keep records;
  • Help develop coursing materials, if needed;
  • Assist in the effective running of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme;
  • Daily planning toward, short, medium and long-term goal attainment in both programmes;
  • Facilitate specific activities to industry best practice and Risk Management standards;
  • Uphold, maintain and co-develop risk management and standard operating procedures;
  • Organise logistical components of programmes;
  • Administrate programs and communications to a high level;
  • Keep diary notes of programme progress;
  • Assist in visiting School classes for programme preparation;
  • Liaise with School staff to ensure their integral involvement and readiness in the Outdoor Education programme;
  • Participate in regular skills development and maintenance and scenario training;
  • Assist in maintaining Outdoor Education equipment and storage shed.

Primary Objectives

  • Assist in the delivery of safe, organised and effective Outdoor Education programme, Certificate II Outdoor Recreation and Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme;
  • Ensure all aspects of work are done to a high standard (particularly safety) in accordance with industry best practice risk management.

Work Environment

  • Display positive interpersonal skills needed for the delivery of quality service with a particular emphasis on communication and teamwork;
  • Ensuring all work documents are kept in a confidential manner;
  • Attend School functions, as required. 

In addition to the above, Teachers are expected to:

  • Design and implement curriculum programmes that embrace the School's Learning Framework;
  • Create a positive classroom environment that enhances student learning;
  • Establish and review students' learning goals/outcomes and modify curriculum programmes accordingly;
  • Continuously reflect on teaching practices and fully participate in the School's Personal Learning Programme;
  • Build relationships and share teaching insights with colleagues in order to coordinate activities for students;
  • Communicate with parents about student learning;
  • Demonstrate professionalism and a commitment to professional development;
  • Contribute to the School and wider community through involvement in co-curricular activities;
  • Maintain accurate records and meet deadlines.

RELEVANT OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP AND ACTIVITY SKILLS

  • Bushwalking;
  • Canoeing on flat water;
  • Kayaking on flat water;
  • Sea Kayaking in inshore conditions;
  • Abseil natural and artificial surfaces/structures;
  • Climbing natural and artificial surfaces/structures;
  • High and low ropes;
  • Campsite management;
  • Staff & student management & facilitation;
  • Driving 4WD;
  • Record keeping for results/assessment and petty cash;
  • Logistical organization;
  • Expedition skills in group/staff management.

SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
The School takes child protection seriously, and as a staff member or volunteer of The Rockhampton Grammar School, you are required to meet the behaviour standards outlined in our Practice and Behaviour Guidelines. You will receive a copy of these guidelines as part of the induction process.

Therefore as a part of your duties and responsibilities, you are also required to:

  • Provide a welcoming and safe environment for children and young people;
  • Promote the safety and wellbeing of children and young people to whom we provide services;
  • Ensure that your interactions with children and young people are positive and safe;
  • Provide adequate care and supervision of children and young people in your charge;
  • Act as a positive role model for children and young people;
  • Report any suspicions, concerns, allegations or disclosures of alleged abuse to management;
  • Maintain valid “working with children” documentation;
  • Undergo periodic “national criminal history record” checks;
  • Report to management any criminal charges or convictions you receive during the course of your employment that may indicate a possible risk to children and young people.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The successful applicant will be subject to a “Working with Children Check and Criminal Records Check” where applicable. The School undertakes several screening processes to ensure the appropriate protection of children and young people in its care. This includes reference checks, identity checks, qualification check and professional registration checks.

REQUIRED LICENCES/CERTIFICATES

  • Registered with Queensland College of Teachers (QCT);
  • Current Full Driver’s License for a manual vehicle;
  • Driver Authority License for LR, desirable;
  • Current Wilderness or Remote Area First Aid Certification;
  • Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation with relevant specialisations and relevant outdoor leadership and activity skills and experience (an advantage);
  • Certificate IV in Workplace Assessor (an advantage);
  • Use technology to facilitate work requirements;
  • Police Check
  • Safeguarding Children Checks.
