Join the specialist Youth Crime team in the role of Senior Advocate supporting the Ballarat and Horsham offices.

  • Full time maximum term position up to February 2025 ( part time considered)
  • Salary based on experience, range: $98,902 - $123,624 (pro rata) plus super

About the role:
Part of the Criminal Law Program, the Youth Crime team provides expert specialist advice and representation to children and young people charged with criminal offences in the summary and indictable jurisdiction with a strong focus on therapeutic lawyering to ensure quality services and that vulnerable clients are treated fairly.

You will act as a legal advocate for children and young people, primarily in complex Youth Crime proceedings in the Children's Court, and related hearings. You will appear as counsel and a duty lawyer in the Children's Court. You will support and promote proactive and responsive legal services and high-quality outcomes for children in, or at risk of being in, the youth justice system through the delivery of training and stakeholder partnerships.

This position will focus on supporting and servicing the Ballarat and Horsham regions.You can either be based at our Ballarat (Wadawurrung Country) or Melbourne (Wurundjeri Country) office, and dependant on your location, regular travel to Ballarat, Horsham and Melbourne is required.

About you:
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • Extensive criminal law legal advocacy experience in complex Youth Crime matters.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and practical experience in the application of the Children, Youth & Families Act 2005, criminal law and procedure, the law of evidence and other relevant legislation.
  • Passion for advocating for youth clients and the ability to develop strong relationships and communicate effectively with a wide range of clients and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to mentor and train staff and contribute to their development.
  • Hold a current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner (mandatory).
