About the position
At La Trobe University, we offer a holistic and comprehensive suite of supports for our students, including Indigenous students. The social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students is a high priority, and we strive to provide culturally safe and responsive counselling and wellbeing programs as part of removing barriers to completing tertiary education that continue to be experienced by the community.
Reporting to the Team Leader (Counselling) Regional and Specialist services, the successful applicant for this important role will be committed to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and have demonstrated experience in providing mental health and wellbeing support.
They will be responsible for development and implementation of the Indigenous Student Wellbeing Program which includes a combination of case coordination, individual therapeutic counselling, group work, referral, advocacy, and health promotion for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. They will work closely with Indigenous Student Support Services on all campuses to ensure a holistic approach to supporting student.
The role sits in the Health Wellbeing and Inclusion Division, which provides a range of services and programs to the University including specialist counselling offerings (Indigenous, LGBTIQA+ and Men’s), AccessAbility services, Student Wellbeing Connect (case management) services, as well as other staff and student wellbeing functions. The Health Wellbeing and Inclusion Division delivers high quality, consistent and equitable services to address the emotional, psychological, and physical wellbeing of La Trobe University students and staff members.
This role can be based at any of the La Trobe campuses in Bundoora, Bendigo, Shepparton, Albury-Wodonga and Mildura, and will provide phone or video services to students on other campuses.
Skills and Experience
To be considered for this position, you will have:
- Relevant qualification in either Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Counselling, mental health nursing, or other relevant discipline qualification including eligibility for membership of the relevant body, e.g., AHPRA or AASW
- Experience, post-qualification, in assessment, evidence-based interventions and case management, including working with complex client presentations and diverse client groups.
- An excellent understanding of Indigenous matters and be able to demonstrate culturally responsive engagement; and significant experience in the provision of wellbeing and support services, evidence-based interventions, case management with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients including complex psychosocial concerns and significant mental health concerns.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, especially the capacity to work collaboratively and cooperatively in small teams.
