Job description

Senior Data Networks Engineer

About the role

As the Senior Data Networks Engineer, you are integral to the success of V/Line’s Network Development, Assets & Maintenance Department (NDAM). You are primarily accountable for architecture, systems standards and maintenance procedures of Data Networks used by V/Line’s Operational Control Systems (OCS).

Your role is to manage a small Data Networks team and establish strategic frameworks, business direction, business representation and reporting, standards and governance associated with V/Line’s NDAM Data Network operation and management.

Key responsibilities include:

·       Governance and compliance

    • Developing and maintaining a strong Data Networks design and change governance system for V/Line (operational Data Networks focus)
    • Supporting audits, investigations, risk assessments and business continuity exercises relating to the operational control systems Data Networks

·       Strategy, frameworks and collaboration

    • Developing and maintaining the OCS Data Network Strategy, Framework and Roadmap
    • Building strong collaborative relationships with operational control systems practitioners across V/Line and externally, to influence and shape the future network direction

·       Operating the function

    • Providing direction for the OCS data network function to ensure consistent and high-quality data network management in support of V/Line business goals.
    • Leading, integrating and managing data network maturity and building new capabilities to manage data communication requirements across V/Line’s Operational Systems.

·       Financial and business management

    • Developing efficient and cost effective options that can drive performance, efficiency, and compliance outcomes for Data Networks

About you

As well as excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, an analytical mindset and a collaborative approach, our ideal candidate will posses:

  • Proven high level strategic thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills in an industrial environment.
  • Experience in the integration of people, process, and technology. 
  • Demonstrated accountability for driving results and solving problems. 
  • Strong negotiation skills and proven ability to be innovative in managing stakeholders with different requirements.
  • Proven experience with the planning, implementation and application of modern data communications networks, technology products and services.
  • Understanding in the differences between IT and OT/ICS environments, and application of Australian, International and European Standards and industry conventions.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of Industrial Automation & Control Systems (IACS), Operational Technology (OT) and associated Data Networks/communication systems; technical and engineering standards, system design, specifications, and industry best practices.
  • Demonstrated alignment to V/Line’s values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership and human rights.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary Engineering qualifications in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Communications Systems and/or Networks, or a relevant technology-related discipline/field of study/education.
  • From 01 June 2023 onwards, qualification and experience must be suitable to achieve registration with the Victorian Business Licensing Authority (BLA) as a Professional Engineer in the prescribed area of Electrical Engineering, in accordance with the Victorian Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019, to provide professional engineering services both within and for Victoria.

Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience in the design and implementation of Operational Technology (OT) security technical environments
  • Experience working in critical infrastructure sectors outside of Transport, such as Defence, Energy & Water.
