About us

Queensland Hydro is a publicly owned entity established by the Queensland Government to design, deliver, operate and maintain long duration pumped hydro energy storage assets that will be the cornerstone for the transformation of the state’s energy system.

The organisation will drive delivery of world-class pumped hydro assets to provide the long-term storage and reliability needed to power Queensland’s clean energy future. The organisation will play a critical role in assisting the Queensland Government to meet its renewable energy targets and net zero emissions by 2050, supporting the shift in the Australian economy to a decarbonised energy system.

The role

The Senior Design Manager will be responsible for the management of the Hydro Power station intake structures, underground civil and structural design packages and any supporting construction infrastructure. The role will also ensure the successful planning, development and management of asset operational readiness deliverables and activities.

The key accountabilities of this role include:

  • Lead the design management for the civil and structural components of the Hydro Power scheme design that includes access tunnels, caverns, power station layout, waterways, intakes and related construction support infrastructure.
  • Contribute to the manage the design interface risks between the civil, hydro power and OEM designs and issues during construction activities.
  • Be responsible for design plans, schedules, and activities for the Project, including the quality management, document control process, design development through various project stages and 'as completed' documentation.
  • Coordinate the preparation of engineering or works scopes, and review of scopes produced by others.
  • Scope management of deliverables to ensure finalised works are delivered to project budget.
  • Identify and manage engineering, design, and project matters and escalate where required.
  • Contribute to design process to achieve agreed design objectives for all aspects of the project.
  • Ensure operational considerations are maintained throughout the design process including the identification of strategic asset management planning.
  • Define and confirm operational, asset and maintenance requirements and activities.
  • Support Operational Readiness team to ensure Queensland Hydro is well prepared for the construction and commissioning phases of the project
  • Once commissioning has been achieved, identify and manage the activities, documentation, systems, and processes to support ongoing operational readiness.
  • Manage the development of project commissioning, handover and acceptance documentation.
  • Communicate emerging issues and ensure that resolution processes are instigated before issues develop.
  • Assist in the development of the project to maximise support and stability of the electricity network and facilitate renewable generation in Queensland.

About you

To be considered for this position you will ideally possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or equivalent;
  • Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland or ability to obtain within six (6) months

Knowledge and skills:

  • Experience working with multi-disciplinary (mining, civil, mechanical, and electrical) staff and contractors in engineering and construction projects
  • Experience with management of design process or deliverables
  • Ability to navigate and simplify complex engineering and design into tangible work methodologies
  • Review of engineering deliverables (including reports, drawings, analyses including 3D models)
  • High level conceptual and analytical skills, with an ability to analyse complex issues
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a challenging and dynamic work environment
  • Demonstrated experience in the planning and implementation of operational readiness activities on major multidisciplinary developments
