Job description

  • A true hybrid working arrangement that offers a great work/life balance
  • Opportunity to sit in Toowoomba, Brisbane, Maryborough, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, & Cairns
  • Upwards of $186,000 + 12.75% superannuation across a 10-day fortnight

EQL is looking for a Senior Electrical Standards Engineer who wants to work a 9 or 10 day fortnight and enjoys variety of work.

Even if you haven’t heard of Energy Queensland (EQL) you might know our operational brands - Energex, Ergon Energy Network, Ergon Energy Retail and Yurika. As a group, we are growing rapidly and as part of the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan (QEJP), actively helping to advance the energy transition towards net zero.

You may also know that Queensland has one of the highest penetrations of rooftop solar power in the world (with over 40% of homes having solar!). But did you know that this was enabled through the hard work of the Generation & Customer Standards team in Energy Queensland?

Well, what do you think about joining this team and having a direct positive impact on the state? Now is your chance. By joining the team, you will contribute to the next chapter of the renewable energy transition and be at the forefront of the technical changes as they occur.

This could be you – picture this: You start work at 7:00am and finish at 3.30pm. You clock off and don’t check your work phone until you get in the next morning. You pick your kids (furry or human) up and spend quality time with them. You get home, and the sun is still up so you can go for a walk. You work a 9-day fortnight and have every second Friday off, allowing you to get a haircut and take your mum for a coffee. You work from home every Wednesday, and know that you work within a team who know you have a life outside of the office, so you don’t have to feel guilty for not working past your finish time or not checking your phone on weekends. Your supportive and high performing team, yearly pay increases, secure employment, and meaningful projects make work even better.

THE WHAT, THE WHERE, & THE WHY
EQL have continually improved and evolved our generation connection standards to enable more solar, batteries and EVs on the grid, which in turn enables households and businesses in Queensland to achieve their generation goals whilst also ensuring safety for power workers, electricians, and the general public.

As the Senior Electrical Standards Engineer, you will be the technical SME for the team, providing RPEQ advice to your team members, stakeholders across Energy Queensland, and customers. You will actively engage and collaborate with a wide range of SMEs and be involved with technical discussions with customers and their technical representatives.

You will make technical decisions that will shape the standards for connecting generation, including photovoltaics and batteries, electric vehicles, as well as metering and switchboard requirements for households all the way to large industrial installations.

Your technical expertise in generation, metering, protection, communications, power system design and emerging technologies will develop further, and you will have the opportunity to get involved with Australian and international standards committees, present at conferences, engage with universities, and become a recognised expert.

Due to EQL having offices around QLD, you could be working in Toowoomba, Brisbane, Maryborough, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, or Cairns.

The motivation comes from within, and you know what’s important to you. However, if you are someone who values true work/life balance whilst never sacrificing career advancement or opportunities, this is the role for you.
With flexi-working and a 9 or 10 day fortnight in place, the bottom of the salary band is $164,752 - $181,415 for 9 days and $186,170 - $204,999 for 10 days + 12.75% superannuation. The level of payment will be subject to an assessment of the successful applicant’s knowledge, skills and competencies that are required in this position. Conditions of employment are in accordance with the Energy Queensland Union Collective Agreement 2020.

THE HOW
So, how are you going to do the above? There is a great deal of variety in this role, and your days and weeks won’t always look the same. It could look like the following:

  • You update and deliver the standards owned by the team by engaging with SMEs throughout EQL. These align with Australian Standards such as the AS4777 series and legislation which include the Queensland Electricity Legislation and the National Electricity Rules.
  • You draft updates and seek feedback, balancing outcomes to minimise costs for customers but also ensure safety requirements are met.
  • You provide technical advice to the technical officers in your team, and suggest recommendations where a customer seeks a variation to the standard or requires technical advice on some aspect of their application.
  • You manage a trial for a new technology and assess whether the technology should become a standard product.
  • You present at a variety of energy conferences, excited to share the way that your standard has enabled vehicle to grid EVs onto the network.

THE REQUIREMENTS
As you know, this is a highly technical and specialised role so there are a few key things you need to possess to be successful in this role.

You have a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering and your RPEQ licence (or working towards this). You will also have demonstrated knowledge of standards and legislation surrounding electrical engineering. These could include Embedded Generation Standards, Customer Connection Standards, The Queensland Electricity Connections Manual, or the Underground Distribution Construction and processes.

You have experience with Design, Installation or Commissioning of customer installations, with or without Generation Systems, Protection System Design or Substation Design

Additionally, you have demonstrated expert knowledge of engineering calculations and analysis techniques, and have a high level of written and oral communication skills.

THE WHO
Energy Queensland is the group of electricity distribution, retail, and energy services businesses 100% owned by the state of Queensland. We deliver electricity across Queensland through our ‘poles and wires’ businesses Energex and Ergon Energy Network. Our retailer, Ergon Energy Retail sells this electricity to customers throughout regional Queensland. And these essential service activities are supported by a range of innovative products and services delivered through our Yurika brand.

It’s an exciting time to join us and to be involved in the energy sector, so consider us for your next career move, where you will experience:

  • Secure employment backed by a strong collective agreement, with yearly EBA increases.
  • Strong 12.75% superannuation and the ability to earn more with salary sacrifice co- contributions.
  • Healthy work life balance on a 9-day fortnight roster if you choose this.
  • Opportunities for skills and career advancement with access to ongoing training and leadership programs and capacity to build and grow your skills.
  • A chance to give back with a paid employee volunteering program allowing our employees to support communities across QLD.
  • Support and guidance with access to 24/7 Employee Assistance Program and a mentoring program for professional support and guidance.
  • A Safety-First culture, the safety of our people, customers & communities is a core priority.
  • Reward and recognition with an internal reward and recognition program that includes an annual celebration of excellence.
  • Diversity and Inclusion where all employees can contribute towards multiple diversity and inclusion initiatives across our business
