About the Role:
Are you looking for an opportunity to use your geotechnical expertise where you can influence and shape our dam safety practices at site? Then this could be the perfect role for you!
Due to a recent promotion, we now have an opening for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer, responsible for providing geotechnical risk management expertise to our residue facility at Wagerup. The role reports to the Maintenance & Reliability Manager where you will be working alongside operations as the site subject matter expert, supported by our global impoundments team to ensure risk is effectively managed, strategies are implemented and projects delivered.
The key strategic objectives for the role include:
Provides Senior Geotechnical Leadership at a site level and supports the location civil engineer.
Ensure that engineering design and operation Wagerup’s residue storage facilities comply with the Alcoa Mandated Impoundment Policy and Standards, the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), internationally recognised geotechnical best practices and comply with in-country statutory and regulatory requirements.
Provides technical approvals, support and advice to the design and construction of residue engineering projects.
Controls, reviews and updates the instrumentation and monitoring system implemented in the residue areas.
Maintains compliance with Alcoa Impoundment civil/Geotechnical Engineering standards, facilitates best practice transfer, and assists in ensuring that the site residue area capital sustaining works program is well planned and maintained.
Provides technical liaison with the Engineer of Record, designers, and technical reviewers on dam safety matters.
Leads risk assessments and implements mitigation/remedial measures.
Covers the role of Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer for the residue areas as per GISTM requirements.
Acts as an integral member of the Site Engineering team leading the civil engineering function for Residue operations.
Assists with the development of the Residue Master Planning the facilities.

About you
To play a part in our ongoing success we are seeking someone with:
Degree qualified in either Civil, Geotechnical or Mine Engineering.
Experience in geotechnical assessments of dam stability and Critical State Soil Mechanics
Solid understanding of internationally recognised tailings management standards and best practice guidelines such as ANCOLD, MAC/CDA, GISTM.
Brings a minimum of 5 years’ experience in geotechnical/tailings dam design, construction and/or operation.
Thorough comprehension of soil and tailings characterisation (in situ tests, sampling and laboratory testing)
Strong skills in tailings operation and monitoring systems.
Highly developed interpersonal, presentation and communication skills with an ability to build excellent internal and external multidisciplinary relationships.
Highly attuned risk management skills.
Business and customer focus are critical with an appreciation for engineering relationships.
