We focus on our customers’ mission critical and intelligent systems in the defence, security, critical detection & control markets.The Senior Hardware Engineer (Mechanical) is a project leadership and technical execution role for Ultra Maritime Australia responsible for the design, development, integration, verification and validation and support for various programs. Programs may include customer funded projects, internally funded projects such as Internal Research & Development (IRAD), Bids & Proposals (B&P) or overhead funded change initiatives and other emerging needs.What you will be doingProject Leadership & Technical Execution:
- Managing and planning drafting work and allocation of appropriate work to members of the drafting team.
- Participating in System Design and Hardware requirements reviews and establishing the Mechanical and drafting specific requirements for projects.
- In collaboration with the project engineering staff, develop candidate solutions which meet customer requirements and present such solutions during design reviews.
- Oversee the mechanical modelling of equipment and the development of detailed product drawings in accordance with the DEF(AUST) 5085 Standard.
- Manage the configuration control of project drawings in accordance with company procedures with the support of the relevant Project Engineer / Technical Authority.
- Conduct analysis in any of the following areas: mechanics (statics and dynamics), vibration, acoustics, thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid dynamics.
- Assist in identifying safety hazards and contribute to product safety engineering.
- Work with project engineering and production staff to optimise designs for the manufacturability, repeatability, reliability and maintainability, incorporating the concepts of Design For Manufacture and Assembly.
- Create, maintain and change CAD designs, drawings and parts lists for electrical and mechanical piece parts and assemblies in accordance with company procedures.
- Support the integrity of the design by checking of design artefacts, including documents and drawings created by self, subordinates and others.
- Identify non-conformances with engineering drawings and associated parts lists and creating Non Conformance reports in accordance with company procedures.
- Support equipment integration and validation to ensure that the design meets its requirements.
- A high level of proficiency/aptitude in the use of the CAD design program Solidworks (Solidworks Dassault Systèmes SOLIDWORKS Corp) and associated PDM configuration management tools.
- Understand all relevant raw material types, grades and specifications.
- Understand all electroplated, chemically converted or painted processes, principles and specifications.
- An excellent understanding of Configuration Management principles.
- Considerable expertise in configuring and managing drawing changes and be proficient in the use of configuration management tools.
- Understand all fabrication/manufacturing processes utilising the principles identified within DFMA.
- Proficiency in technical drafting with exceptional attention to detail, identifying acceptable tolerance values and the ability to visually communicate a design/requirement into an engineering artefact adhering to form, fit and functional requirements and specifications.
- Experience in developing electrical drawings such as Wiring Diagrams, Wiring Lists, Cable Assemblies.
- Experiencing in developing electronic drawings such as Circuit Schematics or Printed Wiring Board layouts.
- Experience in presenting technical solutions during formal customer design reviews.
- Experience designing for naval or air environments.
- Experience designing for harsh environments such as salt atmosphere, shock and vibration.
- Experience using Solidworks FEA package.
- A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
- At least 7 years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer (various grades).
- Experience in Mechanical Engineering design and development, preferably within the field of Defence, Aerospace and/or Sonar.
- Experience in leading people and teams.
- Experience in the development and independent review of Mechanical Engineering and Drafting/CAD estimates with respect to scope, schedule and budget.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to deliver technical information to a wide range of stakeholders.
- Ability to multi-task across a range of engineering activities.
- Proficiency in technical reporting with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to use sound problem solving techniques to provide reliable solutions to a variety of problems.
- Ability to make decisions with the information at hand.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and professionally across functional teams to achieve goals.
