Work Location: Fortescue's Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.
Roster: Monday-Friday.
Fortescue is entering a phase of exponential growth and is expanding as we move towards our decarbonisation mission into green energy. This means our Heritage team is expanding and looking for Senior Heritage Advisors to join the team. The Senior Heritage Advisor plays a pivotal role in Fortescue's heritage team, working closely and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate heritage approvals and access to land across a suite of Fortescue projects and operations.
Based in Perth, the Senior Heritage Advisor reports to the Heritage Principal and will assist in providing strategic advice to the Heritage team to ensure the delivery of timely heritage approvals for Fortescue's exploration, operational and expansion projects (including but not limited to ferrous and decarbonization projects). This role includes undertaking Due Diligence Assessments (DDAs), maintaining approvals-related procedures; maintaining a comprehensive approvals schedule; drafting and submitting applications made under sections 16 and 18 of the revised Aboriginal Heritage Act (1972); and assisting Heritage Advisors and Officers with complex approvals matters to ensure consistency of approach. The Senior Heritage Advisor will occasionally be required to assist with Social Surroundings-related matters (e.g. consultation preparation).
As part of this role, the Senior Heritage Advisor will also be required to collaborate closely with a wide range of external (Traditional Owners, Legal representatives and heritage representative body personnel, Heritage Consultants) and internal stakeholders (Field and Office Heritage personnel, project managers, mining engineers, Approval schedulers, etc).
Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and assist with the preparation and submission of Heritage Approvals (s16 and s18) as well as Due Diligence Assessments and Cultural Heritage Management Plans where required.
  • Prepare and assist with Heritage Sub-Committee and Working Group meetings.
  • Develop technical understanding of heritage approvals to support Heritage Principal and deliver technical advice to support the business approvals requirements.
  • Support the Social Surrounds team where required (including but not limited to consultation preparation and delivery).
  • Working safely to coordinate consultation and other related field activities in collaboration with Traditional Custodians, their representatives, and internal stakeholders
  • The authorisation of on-site works, in compliance with Fortescue's management systems, to ensure compliance with the Western Australia Aboriginal Heritage Act, and Fortescue's land access agreements, commitments, and obligations.
  • Build and enhance positive relations with key internal and external stakeholders to meet and advance operational and development requirements.
  • Engender a positive team and workplace culture
  • Assist in the collaboration of heritage content for external meetings with Native Title Parties and Government Regulators.
  • Escalation of delays or issues that arise as appropriate.
Qualifications and Experience
  • A tertiary qualification in archaeology, anthropology, or environmental science.
  • 3 - 4 years previous experience in a similar role.
  • Tertiary qualification in archaeology, anthropology, environmental science, sociology or law or a related discipline
  • Experience in the development of cultural heritage management plans will be highly regarded.
  • Good knowledge of the revised Western Australia Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and as a collaborative team member.
  • Excellent attention to detail and demonstrated ability to deliver results while working on multiple projects within tight timeframes.
  • Highly developed administrative and computer skills in the Microsoft Office suite and spatial management software (Arc GIS or similar). Ability to learn and use new software quickly and effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders from a diverse range of backgrounds, to establish and strengthen relationships.
  • High-level interpersonal skills.
