Period of Appointment
Appointment to the role is on a fixed term flexible (up to 73.5 hours per fortnight) basis for two years.
Duties

  • Working as part of a technical team undertake the day-to-day activities of the MRT Laboratories including the performance of, and supervision of, analytical testing, maintenance of adequate supplies of testing consumables, chemicals and reagents, and integrity of analytical results, by undertaking quality assurance and quality control of data.
  • Provide specialist technical advice and support to internal and external clients on the suitability of samples for geoscientific analysis, analytical techniques and analytical results for the laboratories.
  • Prepare and provide physical and /or chemical analysis and testing procedures for aggregates, rocks, minerals, soils and other suitable materials. Techniques will include chemical analyses by X-Ray fluorescence (XRF), and X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Carbon/Sulphur analysis through nondispersive infrared (NDIR) technique, microscopy, and various geotechnical methods following Australian Standards.
  • Assist with analysis of source rock and other quarried materials in support of accreditation requirements as defined by government agencies.
  • Maintain an awareness of best practice and current developments in laboratory techniques and practices and actively contribute the development and implementation of laboratory policies and procedures, including the Laboratory Operational and Management Plan, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and hazardous materials procedures, and contribute to a safe working environment.
  • Produce reports on analytical results for both internal and external clients.
  • Assist with cataloguing, curating, and storage of samples and specimens and the maintenance of related computer databases.
  • Conduct project work as directed by the Chief Government Geologist or Laboratory Manager as required.
Essential Requirements
Evidence of the following must be provided prior to appointment to this role:
  • Satisfactory completion of a qualification in geoscience at a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Demonstrated experience in analytical techniques in a geoscience laboratory.
The person must continue to satisfy the above essential requirements/qualifications throughout their employment in this role.
Desirable Requirements
  • Ability to use computer packages including Microsoft.
  • Experience in a NATA accredited geoscience laboratory.
  • Current driver's licence.
  • Current Workplace First Aid qualifications.
