Job description

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) is looking for a Senior Lawyer to join its Burnie team in North West Tasmania.

The focus of the role will be to lead the criminal law practice within the region, and provide culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to clients in a broad range of matters.

What we are looking for

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in criminal practice and procedure, with substantial experience in appearance work in the Magistrates Court. Experience in the Supreme Court is preferred but not essential.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring and supervising staff, including junior lawyers.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with others and foster a positive team environment.
  • An understanding of the social issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Tasmania, and a deep appreciation and respect of their cultural needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to relate to a wide variety of people.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and relationship building skills, demonstrating a history of maintaining positive and effective partnerships.

What we offer

This is a rewarding opportunity to join a forward thinking and inclusive organisation who is focused on making a difference, where it really matters.

A competitive salary is available, plus access to salary sacrifice benefits (increasing your take-home pay). Our team also enjoy flex time benefits, and generous leave provisions.

Assistance with relocation costs or a sign-on bonus may also be provided.

Requirements

The successful candidate will need to undergo a National Police Check and apply for a Working with Vulnerable Persons registration.

A current driver’s licence is required, as travel will occur across Tasmania.

How to apply

If you would like further information about the role or a copy of the position description, please contact Hannah Phillips on 0407 041 *** or email ****@tals.net.au.

Please send a current resume and cover letter outlining your interest and experience via Seek by 3 April 2024.

Note: TALS reserves the right to close this position early.
