We are currently seeking dedicated Senior Civil Justice Lawyers to join our team at Victoria Legal Aid (VLA). In this role, you will be instrumental in delivering essential legal services, including providing expert legal advice, representing clients in courts, and contributing to community well-being.With a particular focus on supporting communities impacted by the October 2022 floods, you will support the civil justice practice in the regional catchment by implementing services that will assist VLA to reach disadvantaged clients. This includes outreach services, stakeholder partnerships (including the local community legal centre and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations), and community engagement. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people affected by natural disasters and contribute to building community resilience.We have 3x full time or part time positions available across our regional VLA offices, namely Bendigo, Shepparton, Mildura, Horsham, and Ballarat.About you:
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:
- A current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner (mandatory).
- Proven ability to handle complex legal matters including areas such as tenancy, social security, and mental health law, or other areas of law typically within the scope of VLA's Civil Justice Program.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, especially when working with disadvantaged clients.
- Ability to supervise and mentor staff, contributing to their development in civil law.
- Commitment to working collaboratively and fostering a supportive team environment.
- Experience working with First Nations Australians, including an understanding of cultural norms and issues.
- Comfortable traveling frequently to flood-affected regions for outreach, with occasional overnight stays as needed.
