Exciting opportunity for a talented and motivated Lecturer or Senior Lecturer of Digital Pasture Production to join the Faculty of Science
Located at Camperdown campus, Camden campus or Centre of Crop and Digital Agriculture in Narrabri, NSW of the University of Sydney in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences
Full time continuing position offering a base salary of $118K - $167K p.a. (Level B or C) + 17% superannuation
About the opportunity
The at The University of Sydney is seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer of Digital Pasture Production. The University of Sydney has an illustrious 113-year history and significant disciplinary strength in agriculture including plant production & breeding (Plant Breeding Institute), digital agriculture (International Centre of Crop and Digital Agriculture and Precision Agriculture Laboratory), agricultural robotics (Australia Centre for Field Robotics), soil science (Soil Security Laboratory) and hydrology. The School also has complementary expertise in plant biology and animal production.
The successful applicant would bring knowledge of pasture agronomy, digital methods, such as remote sensing, for monitoring pasture productivity in extensive/intensive grazing systems, livestock pasture utilisation, and an understanding of the implications for precision management. They will have a track record of success in teaching, research, and publications commensurate with an early/mid-career agricultural scientist on a rising trajectory. The successful applicant will have research interests that complement and/or enrich the existing strengths and expertise of the School. They will show a willingness to contribute to current research programs, and lead in the initiation of internationally-leading research programs focusing on Digital Pasture Production, utilisation and management.
The University places emphasis on research excellence with impact; inter-disciplinary research is encouraged. SOLES has a program of undergraduate teaching in agriculture from first year to Honours/Masters level and the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to this teaching program through subjects in plant and animal production, in addition to being actively involved in postgraduate training. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in management and administration and should be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the promotion of teaching and learning.
About you

a PhD in an appropriate area (pasture agronomy, livestock production, remote sensing, or a related discipline).
knowledge and experience gained at postdoctoral level in precision pasture management for livestock production, or other Digital Pasture and animal-based agronomic research, with a track record of quality research publications as first or senior author.
knowledge and experience in agricultural production systems and environmental ecosystems relevant to Australia.
experience developing and using spatial models, proximal/remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and/or other digital technologies to describe variation in Pasture Production and utilisation for livestock production.
track record of funding and experience in successful collaborative projects.
the ability to lead an independent research program as well as being an enthusiastic and successful team member.
a willingness to promote SOLES activities within the livestock industries through research and training programs with farmers, advisors and commercial suppliers.
a willingness to foster inter-Faculty research development opportunities and provide technical expertise in precision pasture management to the University farm management in support of production improvements.
a clear vision of how your planned research would complement and/or enrich the existing strengths and expertise of the School and would benefit from our diverse farm resources across NSW (Narrabri, Camden, Nowley, Llara, Corstorphine, Pye Farm, Arthursleigh).
evidence of high-level commitment and demonstrated success in the development, coordination and delivery of plant/animal production and/or GIS-related undergraduate units of study
demonstrated ability to provide specialist, research-led teaching on precision pasture management.
experience of successful supervision of honours and higher degree research students, including PhD students, either formally or on a day-to-day basis.
excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication and time management skills.
demonstrated understanding and experience of relevant work health and safety and biosecurity issues including laboratory- and field-based work.
