Your role  

As the Senior Legal Counsel, Consumer and Commercial at the SEC, you will be responsible for managing the delivery of legal services to the SEC’s consumer energy product business and across its corporate support function. 
 
We are looking for a candidate who can offer practical solutions to complex legal issues while dealing with stakeholders in an honest, authentic and kind way. In this role you will be a trusted business advisor with a passion for legal excellence and be a person who cares about team culture.

What you will do:  

  • Provide expert and Commercially relevant legal advice on legal and regulatory issues affecting the SEC. 
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders across the SEC’s consumer product and corporate teams to lead the drafting, review and negotiation of Consumer and Commercial contracts and agreements. 
  • Lead the identification of legal risks associated with the SEC’s consumer activities, including its obligations under contract, privacy, competition and consumer law. 
  • Liaise between executives and other team members, external professional advisers and external stakeholders to lead the effective and efficient delivery of legal services to the SEC’s Product, Corporate and Procurement teams. 
  • Provide effective management of external legal services and legal procurement, in-house matter management, knowledge management.  
  • Build capability across the internal legal team and the broader SEC business. 
Who you are:  
Must Have: 
Your capabilities and areas of expertise that matter most for this role are: 
  • An Australian lawyer holding or eligible to hold an Australian practising certificate under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Victoria).    
  • 6+ years' experience as a practising lawyer in a public, private or in-house role, with demonstrated experience in commercial & contracts law. 
Highly Desirable: 
Our preferred candidates will demonstrate attributes including but not limited to-
  • Experience within competition, consumer or privacy law.  
  • Experience within, or advising to, an energy or renewable energy business. 
  • Ability to lead the delivery of legal services to clients. 
  • Great relationship building, negotiation and collaboration skills. 
  • Strong team focus and cares about team culture and is deliberate in working to maintain a safe, diverse, inclusive and respectful workplace.  
  • Communicates with honesty, authenticity, clarity and kindness, and approaches ideas and people with interest, curiosity and an open mind. 
  • Values creativity and innovation and prioritises reflection, learning and feedback.
