The Senior People and Payroll Officer is pivotal in delivering a streamlined human resources and Payroll services to the organisation. This HR and Payroll subject matter expert is a solution focused and proactive professional that draws from their experience, qualifications, and expertise in navigating employment and Payroll related legislation.

As part of the Corporate Services Department, the People and Culture team includes a broad range of key functions including: Human Resources, Payroll, Workplace Health & Safety, and Quality Management Systems.

About the Position

Reporting to the People & Culture Manager we are seeking a Senior People & Payroll Officer to step into a role that offers ownership of the end-to-end-payroll function, as well a high level of understanding within Human Resources.   The role sits within the existing HR Team and has the support of a People & Culture Officer.

As the Senior Payroll Officer, you will be responsible for overseeing the accurate, efficient, and timely processing of the fortnightly payroll for approximately 120 staff. You will be responsible for the more complex payroll calculations and transactions. You will also assist in the provision of an advisory service to the employees on payroll and human resources related matters.

We are currently in the process of doing a review of our existing databases, policies and procedures.  The successful person will have involvement in this implementation process so previous experience with system implementation would be beneficial. 

Current database is ELMO supporting human resources processes and My Pay RTA supporting payroll processes, experience in this area would be highly regarded.

Handover and ongoing training will be provided.


The requirements for this role are:

  • End-to-end payroll processing for approximately 100 staff (paid fortnightly) in an environment including timesheet management, terminations and leave entitlements.
  • Completion of high-level payroll activities such as, superannuation, salary sacrifice, worker's compensation and financial reporting to the Finance Team
  • Onboarding and offboarding tasks in the payroll/HR system
  • Accurately interpreting and applying Fair Work Award rules, experience with SCHADS Award essential. 
  • Reporting of HR and Payroll statistics
  • Oversee the administration of HRIS & Payroll systems in collaboration with the HR Manager
  • Ensure staff remain compliant with qualifications, licences, blue card, yellow card, criminal checks etc  
  • Liaise with Managers and staff regarding payroll and HR queries
  • Communicate with external parties when required
  • Supervise People & Culture Officer to ensure deliverables are achieved

Your Experience and Skills:

As the successful candidate, you will possess substantial knowledge and experience in overseeing the payroll function in a medium sized organisation.  In addition you will also require:

•    Experience in processing end-to-end payroll including end of financial year reporting
•    A minimum of five (5) years payroll experience in either a standalone end to end payroll position and/or contributing to end to end payroll processing in a line manager or team leader capacity.
•    Education, training and/or relevant experience equivalent to the completion of a degree with at least two year’s subsequent experience.
•    Demonstrated digital literacy with proven experience working with HR/Payroll systems, reporting systems / report designing, and expertise in the Microsoft Office suite of applications. 
•    Experience in the interpretation and application of HR and Payroll legislation and frameworks, such as industrial awards and Fair Work legislation.
•    Knowledge of payroll legislation and processes i.e. tax, superannuation, workers compensation and FBT
•    Qualification and or experience as a Rehabilitation and Return to Work Coordinator
•    Exceptional accuracy, attention to detail, and time management skills.
•    Well-developed customer service and communication skills
•    Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, as well as strong initiative
•    A team player who enjoys working in a collaborative and supportive environment
•    Adaptability and willingness to learn

•    Previous experience in a similar position will be highly regarded. A current Driver Licence. Ability to obtain to blue and yellow card.
