Job description

  • How effective are the NSW Police in addressing crime in regional and metropolitan NSW?
  • How effective is the government in managing road safety?
  • How effective are local councils in managing their assets?

These are some of the questions you may examine as a Senior Performance Auditor at the Audit Office of New South Wales. Your work will be impactful, insightful, and varied. By helping ensure public sector effectiveness you will make a real difference to the people of New South Wales.

Who are we?

The Audit Office of New South Wales is recognised as a centre of excellence within the professional services sector. For almost 200 years, the Auditor-General has assisted the Parliament of New South Wales to hold government accountable for its use of public resources. We do this by conducting independent audits across the State and local government sectors including community services, health, education, justice, emergency services, transport, planning, environment, and local government.

We have a people-focused culture built on trust, support, and respect. Our culture is supported by values of integrity, curiosity and open-mindedness, speaking out when we need to and taking pride in the important work we do.

How will you contribute?

We are seeking an exceptional Senior Performance Auditor to join our Performance Audit team.

In this role, you will be part of a small, multidisciplinary team responsible for designing and delivering quality performance audits within defined time-frames and budget. Performance audits culminate in a published report to the NSW Parliament with recommendations on how a particular program, service or entity should be improved. This is a great opportunity to apply your sound analytical, judgement and decision-making skills, and to share your expertise with the Audit Office.

What will you need to succeed?

We are seeking people who have:

  • A sound understanding of government policy and processes along with relevant tertiary qualifications (for example in Business, Economics, Policy, Social Science, Law) and/or significant relevant experience
  • Experience in policy analysis, reviews, performance or internal audits, research, program evaluation or similar, including the ability to assess large amounts of evidence, identify performance gaps and develop practical responses
  • Experience in building and managing strong, professional relationships with clients and stakeholders
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex information in succinct reports

What are the benefits?

On offer is a 35-hour work week and a total remuneration package (including superannuation) of $110,124 - $164,114 per annum depending on experience, skills and capabilities, as well as access to flexible work practices and arrangements.

In line with this, we welcome applications from candidates who would seek to perform this work on a part-time basis. While this advertisement is for an ongoing position, we also encourage applications from candidates who are interested in undertaking this work as a secondment or as a fixed term contract.

The Audit Office is a rewarding, challenging and impactful place to work where we value diversity and take a collaborative approach to ‘getting things done’. Here you can have a career with purpose, and real work-life balance as well as unique opportunities for professional development and personal growth.

Our flexible work practices provide our employees with choice in the way they work, within the context of their roles, creating a diverse, skilled, and motivated workforce, capable of delivering quality products and efficient services. This means that some days you’ll be in the office or at a client site, surrounded by peers, colleagues or clients and working collaboratively. Other days, you’ll be working where you choose, this could include a residence located anywhere within Australia, so you can have the focused environment you need to get the task at hand done best. Our flexible approach to work means you’ll enjoy the best of both worlds when you join the Audit Office.

If you do not live in Sydney, it is important to understand that when you are required to attend head office or a client site within the Sydney metropolitan area, you will need to cover the associated travel and accommodation costs.

How can you get started?

The Audit Office of New South Wales values diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We welcome and encourage applications from people of all ages and genders, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, culturally and linguistically diverse groups and those with a disability.

Your application should include a cover letter of no more than two pages, and an up-to-date resume of no more than five pages which clearly details your skills and experience as relevant to this role.

As part of this application process, candidates are required to answer one (1) pre-screening question based on the focus capabilities for this role:

  1. What methods would you use to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of a large government program aimed at delivering grants to people affected by a recent disaster. How would you go about gathering the evidence, what analytical tools or methods would you use, and what would you need to know to conclude on the effectiveness of the program? (Max 500 words)

The application and selection process will include a range of assessment techniques to assist in determining your suitability for the role. This recruitment process may be used to create a talent pool for future roles (temporary or ongoing) that may arise over the next 12 months.
