Inland Rail

Inland Rail is a once-in-a-generation project that will complete the backbone of Australia's freight rail network. It will enhance supply chains by providing a transit time of 24 hours or less for freight trains between Melbourne and Brisbane.
Inland Rail will connect regional Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland to markets more efficiently, drive substantial cost savings for producers and consumers, and deliver significant economic benefits. Inland Rail is the largest freight rail infrastructure project in Australia and one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the world.

About the opportunity

As the Senior Planner you are to produce and maintain Inland Rail Project Schedules, incorporating development, procurement and construction activities including commissioning, handover and operation. The position will also support the ongoing development and maintenance of the schedule to ensure timely completion within the required specifications, schedule and budgets facilitating the integration of the individual project's schedule with the Program schedule.

The responsibilities include and are not limited to:

  • Provide planning and scheduling services to the project team to ensure the on-time completion of projects activities including development, procurement and construction activities.
  • Support schedule refinement with detailed analysis of work packaging, procurement options, cash flows and project budgets, various completion timelines, contractor schedule performance and possession scenarios.
  • Review and critique schedules from suppliers and contractors to ensure they are of suitable standards and for conformance with Programme Requirements, and integrate these into the overall project schedule, and support the assessment of time-related claims.
  • Identify resourcing required for the work and provision of impact assessments based on varying schedule options and liaise with internal and external stakeholders to communicate the needs for rescheduling of their resources to achieve optimal resource loading of their schedules.
  • Produce and evaluate work group requirements in a multi-disciplinary rail environment, considering stakeholder requirements, mass-haul, access, resource, and asset constraints, and provide sound advice on methodologies for all phases of the project lifecycle.
  • Identify schedule opportunities/threats to the project and liaise with the appropriate members of the project team to achieve 'best for project' outcomes.

About You

This role is perfect for someone who is a relationship builder at all levels and is passionate about bringing business context into their work. This role has a high level of engagement with stakeholder across and outside the business and will suit someone comfortable with developing, juggling and fostering relationships as well as working with a level of autonomy.

To ensure success in this position, applicants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Extensive project planning experience including experience in planning roles on heavy construction projects and proven experience in planning roles on major linear infrastructure projects.
  • Strong client-side experience, commercial acumen, and ability to manage sub-contractor schedules.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience using Primavera P6 planning tools, cost and resource loaded schedules, Earned Value Management systems and forensic analysis techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications to produce reports and presentations.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and prioritise and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Desirable Selection Criteria:

  • A strong understanding of civil/structural planning and rail systems
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of linear project scheduling techniques and schedule risk analysis.
