AddressJoin and help lead a dynamic team working in the Leader of the Opposition's Office in Brisbane City Council. Primarily based in City Hall, there are opportunities for flexible working arrangements including working from home.
The Senior Policy Advisor for the Leader of the Opposition will have extensive experience in local or state government, or experience in a similar role outside of government.
The Senior Policy Advisor will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and a demonstrated ability to research, develop briefing notes, speaking notes and policy positions. They will be able to work in a team and take a leadership role and work independently on some tasks.
The Senior Policy Advisor position will require long-term planning and the implementation of a strategic framework for policy positions throughout the term of Council.
Expectations of the role will include the following overall duties.
- Support the Leader of the Opposition in providing strategic political advice and support
- Identify opportunities to pursue the Brisbane City Council Opposition’s strategy
- Provide information, strategic advice and direction to lead the Opposition staff team in a collaboratively manner
- Stakeholder relations and engagement – internal and external (including peak bodies, community organisations, government, business, unions.
- Research and analysis of information and data from within Council and sourced from external sources.
- Draft submissions and reports to inquiries and other bodies
- Lead Opposition staff team meetings
- Work with the Media Advisor and Administration Officer to maintain key information records.
- Research key areas to inform positions on current issues and future policy
- Liaise with State and Federal Government Ministerial offices and identify trends and opportunities from other local governments
Other duties that will occur on a daily or weekly basis include:
Daily
- Identify and advise on current & urgent issues.
- Assist Media and Policy Advisors with content.
- Determine areas for file requests, Requests for Information and RTIs
- Review Opposition office correspondence
Weekly
- Research council meeting papers, budget papers, Council Administration decisions. Brief Opposition Leader and Labor Councillors, Media Advisor and Policy Advisor.
- Research content for possible media releases and digital campaigns in conjunction with Media Advisor and Policy Advisor
- Prepare speeches, letters etc in conjunction with Media Advisor
This role will require you to work in a small immediate team of four in City Hall and within a larger team of Councillors and their Ward Office Staff across Brisbane. It's a leadership position within the Opposition Office, but will also require you to work independently on some tasks.
