Job description

In this newly created role, we need your exceptional interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity to drive a highly specialised response for young people and adults who are impacted by the trauma of sexual violence and family violence. You’ll provide trauma informed counselling, and will work collaboratively with clients, their families and key agencies across the Mt Isa/Gulf region, helping champion our human and child rights-based approach.

54 reasons is Australia’s leading child rights organisation – no ordinary not-for-profit.

Proudly part of the Save the Children Australia Group and global movement, we’re here to make sure that everyone understands their rights. So that children and young people have their rights met and thrive, in all their diversity.

We champion the children, young people and families we work with. We are inspired by the curiosity and creativity of children and motivated by the love of those who care for them.

With the child’s voice at the centre, we provide quality services to children and their caregivers, advocating with them so that children develop, learn, and are connected, safe and confident. Our people are proudly local, reflective of the communities we serve - in every state and territory, and across regions, remote areas and capital cities.

Where you come in:

In this full time, permanent position you’ll work in partnership with a team that includes Family Support Specialists, Childrens Counsellor, community and other service providers to support the recovery, healing and restoration journey of young people and adults accessing the service. Based ideally in Mount Isa with regular travel throughout the region including Mornington Island and Normanton, you’ll be a key member of our Gulf team and will report to your Team Leader.

You will make an impact by:

  • Providing therapeutic interventions to people who have experienced Sexual Assault and/or family violence, from first disclosure to investigation and criminal prosecution
  • Undertaking evidence-based and trauma focussed assessments, case formulation, goal setting, counselling, advocacy, group work and crisis response
  • Working collaboratively with the client and key agencies (non-statutory and statutory) to advocate for, assess and respond to identified risk
  • Providing advocacy and support for people, as agreed by them within the broader service system including police, judicial, medical, educational, child protection and community services
  • Assisting in the delivery of community education and professional training
  • As the subject matter expert in sexual violence, providing coaching and advice to other internal colleagues

Does this sound like you?

You’re proactive and influential, with exceptional skills in assessing and mitigating harm and working with a diverse range of stakeholders to ensure young people, their families and individuals receive the right services at the right time. You’re known for your diligence and genuine care and concern in your service to others, particularly those experiencing risk and vulnerabilities connected with appropriate supports. Your action driven and outcome focused, you have a high level of integrity and personal accountability, and you’re happiest when you are working in a role that provides others access to supports.

This role requires:

  • Significant expertise in providing therapeutic counselling relating to sexual violence, to young people and adults
  • Demonstrated experience working within Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities, including an in-depth understanding of intergenerational and interpersonal trauma
  • Demonstrated skills in therapeutic assessment, crisis intervention, risk assessment and safety planning
  • Ability to work collaboratively with partner organisations and across complex service systems
  • Degree in a Human Services field (Psychology or Social Work), or Diploma with significant equivalent child protection and remote community support experience
