About us

 Queensland Hydro is a publicly owned entity established by the Queensland Government to design, deliver, operate, and maintain long duration pumped hydro energy storage assets that will be the cornerstone for the transformation of the state’s energy system.

 We will drive delivery of world-class pumped hydro assets to provide the long-term storage and reliability needed to power Queensland’s clean energy future. Our projects will play a critical role in assisting the Queensland Government to meet its renewable energy targets, supporting the shift to a decarbonised energy system.

 About the Project

 The Borumba Pumped Hydro Energy Project is a 2,000 MW pumped hydro energy storage project that will deliver large-scale renewable energy storage and generation capacity to the Queensland electricity grid. The mega project comprises the delivery of a lower reservoir (at the existing Lake Borumba) and dam, an upper reservoir and dams, tunnelling for waterways connecting both reservoirs, an underground power station, the connection to a new switchyard plus a host of supporting infrastructure upgrades including to roads and bridges. 

 In June 2023, the Queensland Government committed $6 billion in funding to progress the project, subject to environmental approvals. 

 Purpose

 The purpose of the Senior Project Manager (Roads and Surface works) is to support Queensland Hydro in the successful design, development and delivery of a large scale, long duration pumped storage hydropower project. This Senior Leadership Role will specifically focus on the delivery of the roads and Surface Works of the project. This includes works internal and external to the project site.

 Key Accountabilities

  •  Effectively lead and manage the delivery of the Roads and Surface works scope of works including the delivery of significant road construction projects, civil works and support works internal and external to the project site.
  • Work collaboratively with our contracting partners to ensure the Health, Safety & Environment requirements of the project works are achieved.
  • Build collaborative relationships with internal and external resources, delivery partners, key stakeholders including landowners, local community groups and local environmental groups,
  • Assist the Deputy Project Director (Dams and Above ground Works) in fulfilling the role of Client in all aspects of project delivery relating to the roads and Surface Works including being a key site-based leadership role for Queensland Hydro.
  • Manage and lead the Roads and Surface works multidisciplinary project team including commercial, legal, project management, procurement, contracts, and safety, approvals, environment and communications representatives.
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with internal and external stakeholders, suppliers, and engage regularly to ensure critical input is provided for successful delivery of projects.
  • Proactively identify and communicate emerging issues and ensure that resolution processes are instigated before issues develop.
  •  Actively own the project risk and opportunity register, ensuring that risk mitigation actions are implemented, with higher risk items receiving appropriate oversight, in accordance with the organisations risk framework.
  • Manage the overall integrity and logic of the project schedule of the respective area ensuring on cost and on time delivery.
  • Contribute to the identification and implementation of the Project governance framework in relation to requirements.
  • Negotiate contracts and coordinate the work performed by our contracting partners to ensure that services are provided in accordance with agreed quality standards, budget and timeframes.
  • Preparation of strategic and operational documents, including briefing papers, discussion papers, reports, submissions and responses to information requests that relate specifically to the respective area.
  • Manage complex and sensitive consultations, negotiations and partnership arrangements with a wide range of stakeholders and suppliers.
  • Present to key stakeholders and suppliers in a professional, responsive and customer-focused manner
  • Ensuring the operational requirements for the assets are included in the design phase and implemented during construction.

About You

To be successful in this role you have the following attributes,

Essential

  • Degree level qualification in engineering, management and/or project management combined with significant experience in all aspects of program and project management of multidisciplinary infrastructure projects. 

Desirable

  •  Qualifications in business management (MBA or equivalent) and/or portfolio/program/project management or equivalent experience in the respective fields.
  • Experience in dispute avoidance practices in the program and project management of multidisciplinary infrastructure projects.
  • Experience operating as the client in the planning and delivery of large infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in the energy (power) industry and/or hydropower sector, either asset development, operations and/or commercial operations.
  • Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland or eligible to obtain within six (6) months.

Attributes

  •  Demonstrated experience in a Senior Leadership role in delivery of large remote infrastructure projects that include pioneering works, civils and earthworks, accommodation camps and roads ranging from site to arterial roads
  • Proven track record in leading high performing teams.
  • Providing strategic oversight to the project team, identifying short-, medium- and long-term risks for such a complex project and challenging the team to overcome these with timely mitigations along with identifying and supporting the team in taking advantage of opportunities.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of the supporting infrastructure needed for a significant project.
  • Extensive reporting, presentations, and consultation experience.
  • Extensive stakeholder experience upstream and downstream working across a range of people and teams on large multidisciplinary infrastructure projects to effectively deliver the desired outcomes.
