Position Details 

We have a unique and career changing opportunity for either a Research or Senior Research Fellow within the Advancing Autism Research Initiative – based at the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work.

Working under the broad direction of the Chief Investigator, the successful candidate will assist in ensuring the growth of the Initiative’s capacity and reach through developing, managing and implementing research projects; attracting external grants and research contracts; delivering on strategic research objectives; establishing and maintaining industry and research partnerships; identifying commercially relevant outputs and building the University’s national and international reputation through high quality publications and strong research collaborations.

About the Advancing Autism Research Initiative  (AARI) 

Using novel approaches, the AARI is leading the way in Autism research. With its roots in the early detection and support of autistic children, previous outcomes have included an early  screening tool, therapeutic manual, and book to assist parents and educators. 

The AARI has now extended its focus to include autistic individuals across all ages, with a number of projects looking at adult outcomes, the presentation of females, co-occurring conditions, and interactions within the criminal judicial system.   Currently host to students conducting higher degrees within the initiative, many of the projects are student led with an emphasis on input from community stakeholders.

Some of the key responsibilities of the position are:

  • Actively contributing to the research by collaborating with the Research Team and external stakeholders to successfully deliver project milestones and Key Performance Indicators.
  • Independently contributing to the planning and execution of research by offering new and innovative ideas, reviewing relevant literature and other sources of information, actively participating in the production of data, contributing to the writing, and editing of grant applications and attending seminars, meetings, and conferences.
  • Taking the lead in operation and engagement requirements in scaling up research and education activities and working with relevant Portfolio teams (Research Partnerships, Advancement, Marketing & Communications) to grow the research project strategically and raise the visibility of research impact.
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of productive strategic local, national and international relationships, collaborations and networks with a range of stakeholders including industry, government and other external organisations.

Please note, some out of hours work (including weekends) as well as rural SA, interstate and overseas travel, may be required.

About You 

You are a passionate and driven professional in the field of Autism.  A team player, you will have demonstrated research experience in terms of publications, attraction of competitive grants and presentations at a national and /or international level in Autism or related conditions.  Your well-developed interpersonal skills allow you to foster effective, collaborative relationships with a range of diverse stakeholders, from colleagues to industry partners.

Some of the key position capabilities of the role include:

  • Completion of a PhD in Psychology or related field, or equivalent qualification and/or experience.
  • Proven experience in quantitative research methodology
  • Demonstrated ability to administer autism assessment tools such as the ADOS-2, ADI-R
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in an academic environment
