About the Treaty Authority
The Treaty Authority is a new independent entity with a mandate to facilitate the formation of treaties between the State of Victoria and First Peoples in Victoria.
The Authority’s work is grounded in Aboriginal culture, lore and law and led collectively by a panel of five Members committed to Aboriginal self-determination and empowerment. It engages with a broad cross-section of stakeholders including the State of Victoria, the First Peoples’ Assembly and Traditional Owners in Victoria.
The objectives of the Authority’s work are to:
Facilitate the journey towards reconciliation, mutual respect and tolerance between First Peoples and other people of the State and to
Maintain, promote and advance the self-determination and empowerment, culture and human rights of First Peoples.
About the Role
The Treaty Authority is looking to engage a Senior Research Project Officer to support the development of the research function and program. Grounded in methodologies underpinned by First Peoples’ paradigms, the key focus for this position will be to help establish the Authority’s research function and develop strong relationships with key stakeholders including research partners.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated understanding and lived experience with Victorian Aboriginal communities and cultures. The candidate will also have experience in establishing and administering research programs and will have a detailed understanding of the research process and partnership principles.
The role of Senior Research Project Officer will be suited to a strategic and organised thinker who can work both autonomously and collaboratively to translate organisational objectives into policies and practices. The successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic environment, display a strong work ethic, and be passionate and proactive about being part of Treaty to benefit all people in Victoria.
This is a contract role. Work hours, contract term and salary are negotiable. We are based in Collingwood and open to hybrid work arrangements for this role as necessary.
Key Duties
- Support the design and development of the Treaty Authority’s research agenda including monitoring and evaluation priorities and establish research partnerships and agreements.
- Develop and foster relationships with key stakeholders to strengthen research and evaluation endeavours.
- Prepare research briefs and provide advice to Members on research proposals.
- Make informed project plans and decisions by undertaking specialised research activities.
- Provide technical advice to key stakeholders when planning and supporting evaluation projects.
- Assist in the analysis of research data, both qualitative and quantitative, for the preparation of reports and presentations.
- Be an integral part of the research team by producing high-quality and impactful evidence-based reports, policy and briefing papers.
- Develop a deep understanding and knowledge of Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Indigenous Data Governance principles.
- Work collaboratively with the Treaty Authority Members, staff and consultants to develop and implement systems, policies and procedures for Indigenous Data Governance.
- Provide general project coordination and administration support for research, evaluation, and Indigenous data governance.
- Coordinate meetings and prepare reporting requirements as required.
Selection Criteria
- Experience in a similar project-based, research-focussed role, ideally in a not-for-profit environment.
- A degree in a relevant discipline such as business or project management (preferably at a postgraduate level).
- Lived experience, knowledge and understanding of Victorian Aboriginal communities (essential) and proven ability to engage and work with First Peoples and communities.
- A demonstrated ability to engage and communicate sensitively and effectively with First Peoples, including the requirement for proper negotiation and consultation relevant to the development and implementation of research services.
- A strong track record in research, research supervision and publication.
- Knowledge - and preferably previous experience of - conducting research within First Peoples’ research paradigms.
- Understanding of research process and partnership principles.
- Excellent skills in time and project management and written and verbal communication skills.
- Passionate about being part of a reform to benefit First Peoples’ in Victoria.
- A strategic thinker who can translate organisational objectives into policies and practices.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with people of all backgrounds and levels.
- An ability to work independently, be proactive and collaborate with others.
- An individual who will thrive in a dynamic environment, with a high level of adaptability and resilience.
- Willingness and ability to travel as required.
